A whole day on duty that had gone reasonably well was certainly going to end well, Gillette had decided. Nothing out of the ordinary had happened this day, no pirates, no Sparrow, no her manipulativeness Elizabeth Swann herself, just some drilling, and babysitting sailors. In other words, uneventful. And uneventful, while it meant half pay, was still better than running out and getting yourself killed.

Gillette and his fellow Lieutenant, Teddy Groves, had decided that they should celebrate their good fortune with a drink. Meaning spending some of their pay on some stronger spirits than just grog. Something hopefully that wasn't as watered down as their normal seagoing fare--which while it would do under normal circumstances...it just was not an option tonight.

It was dusk and the night watchmen were out, and the lamps were being lit, casting strange shadows across the ground--it was one of Gillette's favourite times of day--where he could frequent his favourite drinking establishment. The King's Schilling, the said establishment, was one of the few in all of Port Royale where wearing a red or blue coat would not earn you any hard glares from the other patrons--namely because the other patrons were ones were wearing red and blue coats.

There were other familiar faces as Gillette entered the establishment, giving a quick nod to a gathering of Midshipmen by the entrance--one or two of the older more cantankerous individuals, angry at having yet to pass the examinations, for once actually being cordial to the younger midshipmen. No doubt completely drunk.

Gillette glanced about the tavern, looking for Groves' face among all the others. He grinned.

"Teddy!" He called out, weaving his way through the tables and people.

Groves was sitting at a table talking to one of the madies working there, smiling and flirting with her whe he looked over to his right hearing a familiar voice, "Wesley, over here!" he called waving his friend and colleague over before instructing the lady to fetch two glasses of their best ale for Wesley and himself.

Once the maiden was gone, he turned to his friend with a smile and said, "I trust your day went well?" as he spoke he could not help but chuckle a bit for he was assigned to do the same thing that Wesley was doing that day and so he was only curious to see how their days differed and how they were alike respectively.

As he watched his friend and waited on a reply he looked down and smiled seeing that their ale had been put before them when he wasn't looking. "Clever little minx." he said to himself under his breathe with a slight smile. It was a rare occurence when anything a lady does got passed him...although there were indeed a few rare exceptions.

"Come on Wesley, sit down and have a drink...you look like you could use it, my friend." he said to Wesley with a smile as he patted his friend on the back.

"I trust your day went well?"

Gillette gave a glance at Groves and rolled his eyes, indicating to the other officer how well his day went. Drilling was not exactly what one could call a fun pastime. Sure, it kept the soldiers busy, and thier minds from the inherent unfairness of the situation of being lorded over by other men, if their minds could be kept from such a fact, but it just wasn't a fun activity when repeated again and again.

"Clever little minx."

Gillette grabbed his mug and gulped down some of the ale, using the back of his hand to wipe away any remaining ale.

"You and the ladies, Ted. A wonder they aren't fawning all over you...oh wait a minute, they are!" Gillette said, joking easily as old friends do. It was a part of him that he did have, and was quite willing to show and display when not subject to the harsh rigors of duty, and wearing the mask of leadership.

"Come on Wesley, sit down and have a drink...you look like you could use it, my friend."

Gillette grinned and lifted his mug, a toast, waiting for Groves to lift his own as well.

"The King," he said taking a drink, and then with a wink to Groves he quickly lifted his glass, accidentally allowing some to slosh over the side, "and ourselves. As no one else is bloody likely to concern themselves with our welfare." Seeing as how it was Wednesday, and through happy coincidence they were also there for themselves, though not in any wardroom, the Wednesday toast seemed appropriate enough for the evening.

"Oh very funny Wesley...after the escapade we had in here last week...where you met one of the new ladies here.. i think it was that blonde over there with the old man and his friend, you are definitely one to talk." Theodore replied and laughed. "And they say I'm the charmer when you, of all people, had her wrapped around your finger. How that was possibble I have yet to figure out." he added kiddingly.

Gillette grinned and lifted his mug, a toast, waiting for Groves to lift his own as well.

Groves raised his glass to meet with his friend's , "I'll drink to that." he said once the toast was made then took a drink of the ale. He then looked over to Gillette and asked, "So they had you drilling the new recruits as well, eh?" By the annoyed and discouraged look on his friend's face, somehow Groves knew what tried him to a most unwelcomed extreme earlier in the day and he also knew that being at the tavern was the perfect cure for what troubled the both of them.

"So they had you drilling the new recruits as well, eh?"

Gillette spluttered in his ale.

"Good God, they had you doing that as well?" Gillette said. He thought it had been one of Norrington's spiteful actions against the First Lievtenant, for some infraction--unwarranted and imagined in Gillette's opinion, as some sort of punishment. Apparently though, Norrington had simply decided that the two of them were best for instructing the newest recruits.

Gillette shook his head, if there was one task in the Navy that he disliked the most, beyond the allocation of men to the watchbills and quarterbills that came with the rank of First Lievtenant, was the occasional duty of explaining and conducting gun drills. It was appalling, for one thing, if they actually used cartridges and actually fired the guns, a rather expensive waste for the incompetent fools who were only beginning, he'd leave the drill with his ears either ringing, or with a distinctively muffled sound like he had linen stuffed in his ears. Bad enough to simply have that after the battles, he didn't need to put up with that when his life wasn't on the line.

"What did the Commodore have you drilling them on? Hopefully something better than 'this is a cannon, this is the carriage, stand back away from the back of the carriage when it recoils, douse it with water and clean out the remains...' For heaven's sake! I swear, the lot of them gets worse and worse each year. It is almost as if we are recruiting women and children to fight, half of them know nothing about small arms at all, let alone the basics of sailing or climbing a rope ladder. Mark my words, soon enough we'll be running our ships with more landmen than ordinary and able seamen put together." He shook his head again, "Absolutely dreadful."

It was pure chance that Gillette looked up towards the door at that moment.

"Speaking of our superior officer..." he said trailing off.

"I'm afraid so.", Theodore replied and drank somemore of his ale. He then sighed, thinking about all that the new recruits had done to his nerves that day. He could have sworn he had to repeat himself 50 times as he was drilling them and then an extra 10 times demonstrating what to do.

"I agree, they do not make soldiers like they used to." he quipped with a chuckle. In his opinion, the days of eager and able-bodied men like him joining the Royal Navy were long gone and now that he had seen the generation that followed Groves was now worried for the future of his profession. Yet, he also hoped that maybe he would be proven wrong by the new soldiers that were under his wing and through that his anxiety would be put to rest. "But then again, Wesley," he began then paused for a moment before going on, "remember that we were once in their shoes and had to go through the same exact training." Once again, he happily took another sip of ale.

It was pure chance that Gillette looked up towards the door at that moment.

Theodore looked up and sat straight up when he saw that Norrington had walked into the tavern. "Now what do you suppose he's doing here?" he whispered to Wesley as he kept his eyes on Norrington.

"Now what do you suppose he's doing here?" Groves asked, Gillette wondering if that question was aimed at him, or just a random musing.

"Probably getting a drink. He is a man after all," Gillette said, "something he tends to forget on a day to day basis."

Gillette leaned his chair back, so that it's hind to legs were on the ground and the front two off the ground. It looked like a precarious position, but for Gillette it was one he favoured and was very practiced at. He had no worries about toppling over backwards. Years on the sea had forced him to develope good balance, and it had its applications on land.

Norrington entered the bar somewhat hesitantly, not exactly the commanding presence that he exuded at the fort, or when at sea. Or pretty much anywhere else, for all that Gillette could recall. Norrington was born to command men, and to lead others into battle, and always a gentleman.

It was a pity that the man seemed to have the most rotten luck though.

Norrington made for the counter, stepping up and placing his order, waiting silently while the barkeep filled it. He gazed out over the assembled soldiers and sailors, they met his gaze, the sailors knucking their foreheads in respect, acknowledging both his presence and his rank.

His presence did not cause too much of a stir--a fact which Norrington noted gratefully, and for the most part the sailors and marines--the two groups not mixing, not entirely surprising considering that the marines were looked on with some disdain by sailors, since they stood guard while punishments were administered.

He caught two of his lievtenants' gazes, First Lievtenant Gillette, due for his own promotion soon, and Second Lievtenant Groves, who would no doubt be moving up and taking Gillette's position on the Dauntless. Gillette nodded at Norrington, then dropped his gaze, before Norrington's attention was sought and captured by the barkeep, who brought out his brandy. Only the finest for the Commodore. Hopefully soon that would be Admiral, given the temporary nature of his rank.

Norrington took his drink and made his way through the crowd, intent on reaching his customary table in the back--a path which would bring him right by the two lievtenants.

Gillette turned to Groves and murmured quietly, almost conspiratorially, "wave him over, the last thing he should be allowed to do is drink alone."

"You're right about that, Wes." Groves said just as quietly before turning to his right and facing the Commodore. He then softly cleaed his throat then asked, "I say, Commodore, would you like to sit over here with us?"

After he spoke the waitress cam by with another round but when she heard Groves pose a question to Norrington she looked to the two men and said that she'd be back with another drink for their 'friend'. Groves nodded in compliance then turned back to Norrington.

"Come on Commodore...sir...what's a harmless drink or two among friends and compatriots such as us, eh?" he asked with a friendly smile before he fell silent awaiting Norrington's answer.

Norrington weighed the option of continuing past the two lievtenants, against sitting and drinking with them. He was only planning on drinking one drink, but looking at the two of them--they seemed to look like they were ready for a full night of drinking, especially considering that neither of them were up for another duty shift until later in the day tomorrow. He'd have to look at Gillette's watch schedules again to make sure that that particular scheduling didn't come up again.

However alienating the officers under himself wasn't an option either.

Norrington sighed, and stopped by the lievtenants' table, nodding at them before pulling out a chair and sitting.

"Come on Commodore...sir...what's a harmless drink or two among friends and compatriots such as us, eh?"

"No harm if it is for the correct reasons," Norrington said, watching the two carefully, "most assuredly if it is not simply because one First Lievtenant got it in his mind to arrange for later shifts so that a full night of drinking wouldn't interfer with duties, and that the Second Lievtenant seconded that plan purely for the drinking.

"And don't think I didn't see that, Gillette," Norrington said, turning his full gaze upong the lievtenant.

Gillette sat back in his chair smiling innocently.

"Are we not allowed to have some fun?"

"Not at the expense of either your commander, or your duties," Norrington said taking a sip of his brandy, careful to use the mug to hide his smile as he spoke next, "and how did both of you enjoy training the new recruits today?"

Groves gave his superior an innocent smile before clearing his throat and listened to the exchange between Gillette, knowing that it was best if he didn't say anything and let Gillette handle it.

"Not at the expense of either your commander, or your duties," Norrington said taking a sip of his brandy, careful to use the mug to hide his smile as he spoke next, "and how did both of you enjoy training the new recruits today?"

"Well it was rather...interesting...though if I may say so, sir, this group may take a bit more time to whip into perfect form when compared to the previous set. These poor soldiers are either equipped with little experience on the sea or none at all. But I will say this, and I'm sure Gillette here will agree with me, this group has a great amount of potential that will definitely be visible once their nervousness subsides...right Wesley?" he aksed and looked over at Gillette hoping his friend would agree with him.

Gillette drained his mug before he answered.

"Oh, potential they have, I'm sure of it. There are, however, one or two troublemakers in the group who will have to get it beaten out of them. Honestly, if we lack the capacity to properly draft troops, and must resort to pressing landmen into service..." Gillette trailed off, sobering, "well, we'll be setting ourselves up for more work then, eh, Teddy?"

Gillette raised his hand signalling the tavern wench over for more drinks.

"It's far from being a perfect system," Norrington said, "but I am loathe to introduce more policies that will further alienate the populace from ourselves. We are not as popular as the Army here, even though we are the ones who protect the shipping, and see to it that there are no attacks on the towne. The Army, though it cannot say that, does offer a far more lucrative bonus to the enlisted men.

"But to track back to our topic, they will be fine once they gain their sealegs. They're men, and men can be drilled enough to fire a broadside as surely as they can walk on land. I have my confidence in you," he said with a nod at the lievtenants.

"Touched," Gillette remarked dryly.

"More drinks?" he said, trying to peer into his fellow officers' cups to see if they were dry, while the woman stood waiting, tapping her foot impatiently. Norrington shook his head at the question.

"We really must do this more," Gillette remarked.

Groves nodded, "Very much so Wesley." he said trying to keep from chuckling as he spoke. He then looked at Norrington and finished his ale as he waited on his response.

"Yes but then again they also do not mention the training they put their new recruits through which is on a certainly grander scale than what we put our boys through..right Wesley?" he asked Gillette remembering what they had gone through when they were the new Naval recruits.

"But to track back to our topic, they will be fine once they gain their sealegs. They're men, and men can be drilled enough to fire a broadside as surely as they can walk on land. I have my confidence in you," he said with a nod at the lievtenants.

"Very touched." Groves chimed in after Gillette's reply though he felt that now he and Gillette now had some more pressure on them to live up to Norrington's expectation as far as training the new recruits went. but then again he had faith that they could easily accomplish such a feet, one that some of their equals would consider a very tremendous and burdensome task.

"More drinks?" he said, trying to peer into his fellow officers' cups to see if they were dry, while the woman stood waiting, tapping her foot impatiently. Norrington shook his head at the question.

"Why not.", Groves said as he allowed the wench to take his mug and refill it. Seeing Norrington shake his head, he jokingly said, "Oh come on, Commodore, another drink won'y hurt you....besides you seem more tense than Wesley is, which is not normal." he then laughed a bit before he looked over at Gillette as he spoke.

"We really must do this more," Gillette remarked.

"I agree, there's nothing better than unwinding with friends after a long day.", Groves remarked cheerfully as his and Gillette's newly refilled mugs arrived. He then looked over to Norrington, "Now about that second drink for you...." he said hoping the Commodore would get it but yet he knew that there was a good chance that he wouldn't.

Norrington remained steadfast on his decision to not drink. He was not a man who was prone to excess, even in the name of celebration, and would rather maintain not only that image, but the actual fact as well.

"That is quite alright, Mr Groves, there is no call to induldge more than in necessary tonight. Unlike the two of you I am due back at the fort early tomorrow, and I am subject to be called for emergencies whenever they happen. Something I should like to remind the two of you that you are as well, whether or not you are serving a shift later. Don't overdo it," he cautioned.

Gillette nodded as he took a sip at his refilled drink.

He well knew, as well did Teddy, that pirates could attack whereever, whenever, and if it was here at Port Royale, they would not go easy on them just because they might be too drunk, or too hung over to properly fight.

"Ah, but there are times when one is allowed to overdrink," Gillette said, "do you not remember when you received your promotion to captaincy? We were so drunk we could hardly tell your new ship from the dock it was at." He grinned as he recalled the occurance.

Norrington fought back a grin on his own.

"Well, that is certainly not an experience that I should wish to repeat. Though, given the way things are...both of you may be getting your shot at it before too long. Gentlemen, pretending for the moment that there is drink in this empty mug," Norrington lifted it, "To a new addition to our squadron, the Admiralty has seen fit to send us a new frigate!"

Groves nodded also , "Yes sir." he said making a mental note that this was to be his last drink..unless he felt the need for a third drink, then that would be his last one for the night.

"Ah, but there are times when one is allowed to overdrink," Gillette said, "do you not remember when you received your promotion to captaincy? We were so drunk we could hardly tell your new ship from the dock it was at." He grinned as he recalled the occurance.

Groves smiled thinking back to that night of total drunkeness between the three of them. He chuckled to himself thinking of when Norrington had fallen into the water after failing to stop at the dock's end. It took both himself and Wesley at least a half hour to finally pull their friend from the cold moonlight waters.
Once he heard the news that Norrington just mentioned, he raised his mug and alligned it alongside Norrington's "Here, here!" he said with contained joy then looked over at Wesley, waiting for him to join in the toast.

Gillette brought his mug up to toast the new vessel. A frigate was good news, sure she would not be much if it came to outright war with the Spanish, French, or Dutch, but a frigate was more than a match for other vessels, and an addition sorely needed by their squadron, to balance out the one ship of the line, and the two sloops.

"May we inquire as to the identity of this fine new lady come to grace our squadron with her presence?" He asked Norrington.

"The Proserpina," Norrington said with a small smile, a ship named for the wife of Hades, the god of the underworld in Greco-Roman myth, fated to spend half her time with the living, and half in the dark shadowy depths of the underworld. As he thought of it, somewhat of a telling ship name for the squadron. Afterall, was it not them who had more claim than most to lay on dealing with beings dead? Or those who clearly should have been?

"To the Proserpina!" Gillette echoed raising his mug once again. The officers toasted the new ship.

Gillette put his mug back on the table and leaned back in his chair.

"It'll all be different, won't it?" he said, his mood changing to the melancholy rather quickly. He looked at the other officers. It was no secret that he was due for promotion, overdue some might say were it not for his quick temper, and then he would most likely be transferred to some sloop, maybe even outside of the Spanish Main. Groves would get his position on the Dauntless...but the three of them wouldn't be on the same vessel...likely ever again. It was a disheartening thought...promotions were good, and one to the captaincy of a vessel would offer him wealth, a chance at prizes, a chance to make a name for himself independant of his father's, but it would take away much as well.

Norrington looked at Gillette's his eyebrows furrowing as he looked at the lievtenant with surprise. It was an uncharacteristic turn for Gillette--one who was generally quite eager to poke fun at the establishment, or made sarcastic remarks about anything in general.

"We'll still be in the same squadron," Norrington said, "and we will all still be here in Port Royale, and we shall always have our friendships, no matter what else may happen--so let us be merry tonight, grateful for this one blessing, or one great item that brings many blessings in return."

Groves was silent as he looked at his two friends, not sure what to say. In fact, he was honestly uncomfortable by the presently somber mood between the two fo them and he was completely unsure as to how to act in this sort of situation. Of course he was happy about the new frigate but did not want to totaly mess things up with a joke or some sort of badly timed but comical comment though deep inside he wanted to do so and hope that it would lighten the mood, but then again perhaps, this one time, silence was indeed golden and the best thing for him to remain for the time being but he did let out a soft and sad sigh

Norrington caught Groves' soft sigh, turning his head slightly so that he could watch the younger man. Most likely their topic of conversation was not sitting well with the young lievtenant, not that he could entirely blame him. There was a time and place for the somber thoughts of what the future may bring, but in the end it was always more preferable to keep things on the present, and the pleasant times that remained so close in one's memory.

"Well," Norrington said, pushing the chair back and standing, nodding at his subordinates, "I believe that I have imposed myself upon your kind persons for longer than was due tonight. The evening has been a great pleasure, but I must go and prepare to retire for the night. Good evening, gentleman, I shall see you tomorrow afternoon at the fort."

He took a couple steps towards the exit before he paused, turned on his food, and spoke his final words to his companions for the evening, "and the two of you make sure that you are not too hung over tomorrow. Lievtenants or no, I will not be lenient when it comes of having my officers drunk on duty." He said the last portion with a smile, intending no offense or ill will towards the others, simply reminding them to take their evening easy with regards to the intoxicants.

Groves looked at his superior with an innocent smile. "Oh don't worry sir, we'll be perfectly sober tomorrow, won't we Gillette?", he asked his friend with a pleasant smile. Though he really did want to enjoy an evening of drunken fun, he knew that it was best to let that hope be loked away in his mind for a while....all things in moderation as Norrington always used to remind both himself and Gillette on nights like this one. With no other word coming from his lips he pushed his mug out of reach as if to show how serious he was about being sober for whatever the next day brought their way.

Gillette almost missed Groves' cue.

"Of course, sir. Never drunk on duty. Maybe prior..." He was waiting for Norrington's admonishing glare but the Commodore simply waved it off and exited the tavern.

Gillette cocked his head to the side and waited for a few moments, just to be sure that the Commodore was gone, and then turned to his companion for the night with a wicked grin.

"How about another round of drinks? We've certainly earned it this night, though...I suppose abusing this priviledge might have its unfortunate side effects," he leaned back in his chair stretching out.

"But it is wonderful to no longer have ringing ears, goodness, I can't say that I've ever had to drill recruits for that long before on simply being able to fire a cannon. It's the bloody easiest part, nothing to it, loading--now that I can see some problems with...let's just hope that the pirates, the Spaniards, the Dutch, and the French keep it all in their minds to wait until we are ready for an attack. Honestly...as good as the marines are," Gillette lowered his voice, seeing more than a few redcoats in the tavern around them, "it would not be my choice to leave our primary defenses up to them. They may have mastered the musket, but it's our sailors manning the gun crews on ships more'n them. First line of defense and all."
