![]() Aztec Gold Forum : Website : Character Availability "You don't know what this is, do ye? It's Aztec Gold . . ." Who knew that what seemed to be an innocuous medallion could upset the course of history and forever reshape the Caribbean, and the world? Like a stone dropped into a pool, the ripples reach far and wide, and many others than those initially involved are now caught in the stormy waters. "The world is shrinking, the blank edges of the map filled in..." The activity of pirates like Jack Sparrow and Barbossa has caught the eye of the Honourable East India Company, and now the Company makes the West Indies their base of operations, under the tyrannical Lord Cutler Beckett. All citizens are now considered suspect of either being or aiding pirates, and in the eyes of His Lordship are guilty until proven innocent. Even children are not safe from his "justice". The former-Commodore Norrington, once in charge of the Royal Navy squadron in Port Royale, has fled his own court martial. In his place, newly promoted Commodore St Montgomery, a cruel man willing to sacrifice anyone to advance his own cause, has allied the Royal Navy with the Company. If anything, tensions between the two groups have only increased since the alliance, and it would take little to spark off this powder keg. The pirates were already losing their grip on the Caribbean, their numbers dwindling. If they are to survive, they will have to overcome their petty disputes and band together under the leadership of the Brethren Court. It is time to sing the song, and choose a leader. And what of those others--craftsmen, children, sailors, prostitutes, the gentry? Everyone is affected by everything else, and all have their part to play in shaping the world. Starting before Dead Man's Chest and adopting characters from all three movies, Aztec Gold rewrites the sequels--borrowing plots and events, but adding its own twist to the story with the addition of original characters and more plots than even At World's End could boast. After Curse of the Black Pearl, nothing is set in stone, and is subject to the will of the members. |

Plot Addendum, Purpose AG's purpose as a board is to be, for the most part, historically-minded. As we use the characters and locations of Pirates of the Caribbean, as well as some of the plots, we will not always be completely historically accurate. For example, Port Royal was destroyed by an earthquake long before the period in which the movies take place, and we can probably be safe in assuming that the supernatural elements from the movies never really existed - but we still use Port Royal as one of our locations, and we use the supernatural canon characters too. However, we do maintain a certain level of historical accuracy. The goal is not to construct an RPG that you can use as a textbook, but rather to take history and use it to inspire interesting characters--with dilemmas, thoughts, ideas, and more than just a feel of the period. While there is nothing wrong with playing a common stereotype like a female pirate, we find interest in exploring other professions and types of characters--for example, an apprentice printer, or a soldier in the Army, a marine in the Navy, a powder monkey, a surgeon, a midwife, a novel-writer, a politician, a housewife, a cobbler, an indentured servant--professions often ignored in RPGs of this fandom. It's a way to explore how people thought then, how they fit in the world; it's an exercise in putting yourself in another's shoes, and trying to imagine how it might feel. RPing characters like this with some historical accuracy can require a bit of research; it can involve learning what language and words were used back then, learning about a different religion than your own, another profession than what you do. But you don't have to do this alone. We have members and staff here who would like to share their love of history, and their knowledge of such, with you. We have resources written by staff and members here in the Binnacle, and a thread to ask questions if you are unsure of the answer, or if you don't know where to find the resources to help you. It may seem like a lot of work to be historically accurate, but the reward is more than worth it. |
