We do not require everyone to be an expert historian for the period of the RPG (which we place in the 18th century, and around the year of 1751), however we would like it that people have a basic knowledge of the time period (ie they know that there are no laser guns, lightsabres, machine guns, skyscrapers, etc), and if they are to play a specific profession--such as being a soldier, officer, or a sailor--they know some of the common terminology, and what the profession is about. Here on AG, we prefer to play PotC more as a historical RPG, than necessarily as a fantasy RPG (as it was far more fantastical in the sequels). We will still have some fantasy elements--we acknowledged the un-deaded-ness of the Black Pearl's crew in the first film, we have a Davy Jones and the Flying Dutchman, and a Tia Dalma with some supernatural powers, however for attitudes of characters, as well as weaponry, organisations, laws, we defer to the historical facts whenever possible (room is made to counter historical facts in order to fit with the visuals of the movie, and in order to allow for some plots). All that being said, I feel it is necessary that we provide some resources with basic info, or in some cases, expanded information, for those who wish to have it, as well as some information specific to RPing plots here on AG, resources that reflect what things would have been like from 1740-70 CE -- the designated range for Aztec Gold. AG Resources: (Please note, that not all these resources are necessarily completely historically accurate--some try to "explain" the PotC movies, which are not accurate, and thus may accept some of thier inaccuracies and continue to use them) Historical:
