Plot: First appears in "Accidental Adventure", and later in "Repercussions" and "Prelude to a Promotion"..

History: The Alderbury family hails from Bournemouth, in Hampshire. Gabriel's father, Henry by name, served as a Customs officer and it was from him that Gabriel learned the finer points of catching would-be smugglers. His father taught him a variety of skills that the younger Alderbury put into good use as he came into his teenage years, when he went to work assisting his father in his duties. Several merchants who comprised a small smuggling ring took offence at Henry's diligent thwarting of their operations and sent a hired thug round to the Alderbury home. The Customs officer, when he answered the pounding at the door, received a lead ball through his cheek. He was dead before he hit the floor. Gabriel was the first to reach his father's side, but there was nothing to be done.

His anger at the men responsible for his father's murder spurred him to take a one-way trip to the harbour, where he knew a Navy ship to be lying at anchor. The end his father had met was warning enough that taking on as a Customs officer was unwise. It took less than a day for him to secure a berth aboard HMS Alarm of twenty-six guns as a midshipman. Though he was thirteen and almost too old to a midshipman, he took to his studies and tasks readily. He remained with Alarm up to and following his examination for lieutenant, which took place a little over a week after his seventeenth birthday. He would have gone before the examination boards sooner, had it not been for his unfortunate tendency to act before thinking.

Upon receiving his commission as a third lieutenant, Gabriel found himself facing transfer. Alarm was bound for the Mediterranean, but orders had come that required two lieutenants and a midshipman to go aboard HMS Spear of fifty guns and remain with the Channel fleet. He was disappointed by the lost opportunity, for he had heard glowing praise for the Mediterranean from common sailors and other officers alike. Places like Gibraltar and Minorca figured prominently in the sea-stories and young Gabriel longed to see them for himself. He did his best to forget the unexpected change of fortune and carry on with his duties.

Gabriel was nearly twenty-two when he was promoted to second lieutenant aboard Spear and again found himself being sent to another ship. This time, he went aboard HM Sloop Falcon of sixteen guns and prepared to sail for another tropical port - Jamaica. He was unaware that the assignment was a means to get rid of him, for his penchant for rash actions had made him more trouble than he was deemed to be worth. In the Caribbean, however, Gabriel found a happy sort of existence. He worked hard and, while he was not an outstanding lieutenant, he proved himself able. His diligence earned him his first real command, when he was placed in charge of Falcon in place of the previous master, who had suffered an attack of gout so bad that he was invalidated out of service. For Gabriel, it was the culmination of the long years of work in the sweltering Caribbean sun. He was twenty-six years old and in command of his own ship. What officer could ask for more?

He would hold onto his command only for two years, before his proven tendency toward impetuousness cost him dearly. Whether it was pride or an over-inflated sense of faith in his crew, Gabriel was never sure. However, scarcely a day after Falcon sailed off to conduct a regular patrol, his sloop came across a much larger ship. The lieutenant chose to challenge the larger vessel and a pitched battle ensued, the outcome of which was both obvious and inevitable. Thirty-one men had been lost, with fifty-two men wounded, when the final tally of casualties was made. His beloved sloop had been dismasted and Gabriel himself was wounded twice. The disgrace was too great to allow to pass without consequence and he was soon relieved of command and relegated back to the second-rate HMS Dauntless of ninety-six guns as a lowly second lieutenant.

Additional info:

Appearance Gabriel is not a particularly tall man. He stands roughly five-foot-eight with a mostly lithe build, there he has acquired a little added padding of fat round his midriff as a result of soft living. Long-limbed and somewhat awkward for it, he carries himself in the manner of one slightly uncomfortable in his body. When he walks, it's with an ambling sort of gait. His typical stance is upright, though his shoulders sometimes sag when he's deep in thought.

His hands are those of a sailor, worn and well-used. His palms are discoloured, with the skin being unnaturally pinched. The scars are from an accident he suffered as a young midshipman, when he grabbed a backstay to save himself from falling from the mainyard. With all his weight hanging off his hands as he slid down, the skin of his palms was stripped away by the intense friction. His palms healed slowly, the new skin growing back unevenly. The result was patches of pinched flesh across the centres of his palms and the inability to fully extend his fingers. Over the years, he has worked at gradually stretching the tightened skin by slowly straightening his fingers a little each day. His efforts have been eventually successful, but he is still unable to lay his hands flat on any surface without pain.

His fair hair is kept relatively short, to accommodate the powdered wig that is required of his station. Gabriel despises the wig, however, and is in the habit of leaving it in his cabin when at sea. He prefers feeling his own, natural hair under his hat. In defiance of fashion and regulation, he also wears side-burns. These are kept somewhat short, however, and only come down a couple of inches. Fortunately, the side-burns being light in colour helps make them difficult to spot and thus easy to ignore.

The lieutenant's eyes are a light shade of blue and usually hold a light-hearted twinkle within them. His slightly curved nose overshadows the light, almost invisible fuzz of a mustache, which is also against regulation. His skin is sun-browned and a bit weathered from weeks spent at sea. At the corners of his eyes the flesh is tightened and creased into crow's feet. Gabriel's usual expression is one of easy good humour and his voice is cheerful when he speaks.

Personality
First and foremost, Gabriel is impulsive. Though he tries his best to contain it, he tends toward action without proper forethought, which invariably results in unpleasant endings. It was that tendency which got him sent to the Caribbean. While he often means well, he cannot stick to a well-thought-out plan or idea unless constantly monitored.

He is not the most quick of thinkers, but he can come up with on-the-spot ideas if the situation is pressing. Neither clever nor imaginative, Gabriel has a difficult time adapting himself to changing situations or strategies.
