Rhett paced the floor of his cabin with an annoyed look on his face. He hated to wait... no, he loathed waiting. Why was it that he decided to try to get that permission to leave the navy in the first place? Why was it that he wanted to be his own captain? So that he would be the one making the decisions, to make sure that everything happened in the way he wanted, the quicker the better. He never was good at sitting still, and wait. And especially here! This was Tortuga, this was a pirate port and Rhett hated pirates.

He had been out the night he arrived - with the intention of killing someone, he had gone out. And lucky for both himself and some woman whose name he had already forgotten, he had heard her screams. Around a corner he saw them - several disgusting pirates, clearly attempting to rape some woman! 'Click' it said in Rhett's mind, and he drew his sword and went to them. He didn't even say something, his eyes were already fixed on the pirates and their deaths. He slashed the first down from behind, before they even saw him coming, and then they turned to fight him - one still holding the lady, but Rhett had soon sliced another throat and more than that. In the end he threw his knife at the pirate holding the lady, it landed right between his eyes. Afterwards he stood for a few seconds, looked at his work and took a deep breath to relax again. That felt so good! The woman had of course thanked Rhett for saving her, and decided to do so with not only her heart but also her body. She couldn't know that he did it more for himself than for her - he did it because he wanted to kill, not because he wanted to save her. All he needed was an excuse, and she gave it to him. But at least that gave him someone to warm his bed that night.

But the woman was gone, and here Rhett was in his cabin once more, just waiting for something to happen. Waiting for Lord Cutler Beckett to arrive, waiting to catch Jack Sparrow, so he could kill all Sparrow's men and claim the reward offered by Beckett. He had no idea what Beckett's plan was, but as long as it was to Rhetts benefit, it didn't matter. He would carry it out as ordered, claim the gold and the reputation and return to Port Royale with hopes to be able to claim Abigail Brinton. For she had not left his mind, not even during the night with another woman. He remembered how he wished that the woman had been Abigail, and not some Tortugan wench who offered her body to anyone who would say a kind word to her. It was ironic, how Rhett had saved her from men who wanted her body, and then the next moment she had offered her body to him.

Roberts had also annoyed Rhett a bit since they left Port Royale. Rhett had been very close on leaving Roberts behind, to look after Abigail, and the two had nearly had a fight. Roberts claimed that Rhett was out of his mind - again - to do so much for a girl he'd probably leave afterwards. And if he didn't want to leave her afterwards, then was his plan to marry Abigail? Rather than to ruin her reputation now he had tried to save it. Rhett hadn't answered that, but decided that Roberts came along, also because he knew he would need his first mate for the hunt of Jack Sparrow.

there was a knock on the door, and it was of course Roberts who entered. Who else would dare to enter, without Rhett asking them to do so? "What is it?" Rhett asked, and sat down on the edge of his desk.

"I think he is here soon - Lord Beckett I mean. You said he'd sail after we did... so you better prepare yourself, just thought I'd mention it." Roberts said and Rhett nodded with a little smile. No more waiting, he had waited long enough already. They both dressed up in order to meet Lord Beckett, especially Rhett felt that such a man would require that you didn't meet him in your ordinary clothes. Then he sat down behind his desk, and tried to be patient. Now it wouldn't be that long anymore... hopefully...

The mighty ship Endeavour cut through the waves like a hot knife through butter, sailing at its highest possible speed to get to Tortuga as soon as could be humanly done. Upon the elevated helm deck stood Lord Cutler Beckett himself, with his clerk and trusted confidante Mercer on his right, and the commanding officer of the Endeavour, Lieutenant Greitzer, on his left. Behind the trio, the helmsman patiently tried to look where the ship was going without bothering the three important officials, and was having little luck in doing so. The ship had left Port Royal as soon as Beckett had finished dealing with the boy who was now so very critical to their plans to capture Jack Sparrow - the boy who he had soon learnt from Mercer went by the name of Keegan McAllister - and was now only a short distance away from the blasted pirate scum nest that was known as Tortuga. After an officer, one of the midshipmen, informed the three commanding officials that Tortuga was now within visual distance, Beckett turned his head to Mercer and said in a commanding voice,

"Do see to it that our esteemed guest Master McAllister is brought up from the brig."

The clerk bowed his head shortly in compliance with the order and began to walk down the steps of the stern and onto the main deck, and then down more steps below deck which would eventually lead him to the brig. Lord Beckett himself, meanwhile, then turned to Greitzer and added in an equally imperious voice,

"Ready the honour guard."

The Lieutenant nodded and followed Mercer's footsteps down the stairs and onto the main deck, and began rallying together marines and lining them up in a disciplined fashion, before signalling for several sailors to prepare boarding planks, as per instructions. Watching all of this unfold before him, Beckett then caught sight of land a distance not too far from his ship - Tortuga Bay. Pulling out his spyglass, the Chairman looked through it and, sure enough, saw that there was a ship floating majestically on the waters a fair distance away from the actual port itself. Captain Morgan had followed instructions and not waited too close to Tortuga, and this pleased Beckett no end - after all, if there was one thing he could not tolerate, it was inefficiency and an incapability to follow instructions. Still gazing through his spyglass, Beckett called down from the stern to Greitzer below and said in a voice loud enough to be carried down to the Lieutenant,

"Captain Morgan's ship appears heavily armed. Double the guard."

"Sir?" The Lieutenant's voice was quizzical, a prime example of incapability of following orders without question.

"He favours shows of force, Lieutenant," Beckett's tone suggested he was speaking as he would to a small child, "Therefore we must return the gesture."

"Aye sir," The Lieutenant replied, before setting about following the orders.

***

Down below deck, Mercer approached the jail cells that served as the Endeavour's brig. Inside one of them sat Keegan, and it was to this cell that Mercer made a bee-line for. Nodding to the on-duty marine, Mercer held out his gloved hand and soon found the appropriate key being placed in it. Gesturing to the marine to show that he would no longer be needed, the soldier returned to his post as Mercer placed the key in the cell door and unlocked it with a click that echoed across the deck. Swinging the door open, the clerk then leaned inside and fixed his gaze on the boy and ordered sharply,

"On your feet and come with me."

***

The Endeavour reached the Ocean's Blood, ship to infamous pirate-hunter Rhett Morgan, with little more in the way of incidents, and soon the large powerful ship-of-the-line was pulling up alongside the smaller, but still sturdy and well-armed, vessel. With a nod from Lieutenant Greitzer, boarding planks were lowered between the two vessels, and marines began to make their away across quickly and silently, having not even hailed their supposed allies before doing so. Greitzer himself waited until Lord Beckett arrived at his side, before watching as the Chairman began to step across the central boarding plank. The officer followed in his wake, and soon the two officials stepped down onto the deck of the Ocean's Blood amidst a large group of marines who had arrange themselves so that they would in a defensive formation about the Chairman.

"Where is Captain Morgan?" Greitzer demanded of one of the crew, on the behalf of Beckett himself.

Keegan was trying to take all of this in stride. He wasn't entirely surprised to be placed in the brig, it was really the best he could have hoped for among all these ruffians. At least the Lieutenant had in fact given him some food, and Keegan was well adjusted to the rocking and rolling of a ship now that he wasn't nauseous at all. He was even more amazed he hadn't vomited up the rum, but he proceeded to have a splitting headache that didn't let up until they had neared Tortuga. He spent his time in silence and solitude, save the marine who was guarding him for no real reason except probably more intimidation.

The boy was rubbing his temples and willing away the last of the dull throb when someone came down the stairs. He opened one of his eyes, then both of them when he realized who it was. He sat up straight on his bench, grimacing when he realized his rear end had fallen asleep, and then watched the interchange between clerk and marine as the door was opened. Then Moody Mr. Mercer stepped inside.

"On your feet and come with me."

Keegan sighed and hauled himself up to his feet, stretching out his back and arms and groaning with the effort. "Yes, yes, yes," Keegan said, almost impatiently. In reality he was really rather nervous. He had never been to Tortuga, obviously, and his experience with pirates was primarily limited to Jack Sparrow, who wasn't really a pirate at all. He also had no idea where to look or who to ask or what to do. If all the stories he'd heard about Tortuga were true, he'd be lucky to get off it alive. He wondered if Beckett or anyone might loan him a knife of some kind. He would at least feel a little better if he knew he had some way to protect himself. Mercer might be watching him like a hawk, but Keegan doubted if he would really try and protect him.

"Lead on," Keegan grumbled, and he followed along behind. Mentally he was still trying to piece out a plan. His thinking to Tortuga had been interrupted by his headache, and now that it was finally gone, he was going to have to think of something.

Morgan:

They had been ready in good time and left the docks of Tortuga, to wait for the Endeavour further out. Beckett probably wouldn't like to get too close to a pirate port himself, Rhett knew that the Lord had a hatred against pirates much like his own. So they had set sail again and anchored once more further out on the sea, but still close enough to be able to see Tortuga. Rhett had gone on deck, waiting by the helm as he saw the mighty ship appear in the horizon. They had seen the Ocean's Blood too, and headed directly for it. Finally the two ships were next to each other, and Rhett watched as the ships were connected with hooks and boarding planks. While this happened, he took in the Endeavour. It was an impressive ship, but far too large for Rhett to want to sail such a ship. To catch pirates one needed a smaller vessel, because they sailed small vessels too. Small, quick and as heavily armed as possible, that did the trick for Rhett.

He watched as a few men left the other ship and boarded his own, and walked closer to the stairs. One was somewhat smaller than the other, and dressed in dark colors and a hat. His entire presence made even Rhett's men fall silent, and it could only mean that this was Lord Cutler Beckett.

"Where is Captain Morgan?" Greitzer demanded of one of the crew, on the behalf of Beckett himself.

Rhett stepped down from the helm. "He is here, and he is pleased to see you have arrived..." he said and waved his men away so that he could get closer. Roberts emerged from below too, but stayed near the crew just watching the scene before him. Rhett stopped in front of the guests, and waited with saying more. If what was said about Lord Beckett was true - and Rhett guessed some of it was - he was one of those who preferred that you only spoke when spoken to. It was true, he was not the captain of this ship, but right now he was Rhetts superior and he had to respect that. So he waited as patiently as possible for Lord Beckett to adress him, while thinking how strange fate was - that such a little man could hold so much power.

Beckett:

Both Beckett and Greitzer let their eyes move to gaze at Morgan the second he began to speak in response to the Lieutenant's question. Greitzer nodded to the Captain as a way of acknowledgement, and Beckett took in the sight of the man before him. The man was fairly tall, certainly far taller then the Chairman himself, and his muscular body only served to prove his experience to Beckett. His longish wavy dark hair completed the image of a man experienced on the seas, and Beckett was content that he had chosen a fine man for the capture of Jack Sparrow. With a cane grasped in his left hand, he lifted up said cane just slightly as a form of greeting, then said in his bland, somewhat drawling voice,

"Captain Morgan, it is good to finally meet another who shares my views on piracy." He left a brief pause, before adding, "Or to be more specific, how to deal with it."

At that moment the sound of footsteps on the boarding plank behind Beckett and his men was heard once more, and the Chairman turned his head slightly so that he could see who it was who was coming down the plank. It was Mercer, with the McAllister boy in front of him, apparently as a way for the clerk to be able to keep him moving should he prove insolent or defiant. As Mercer shoved the lad from the plank and onto the main deck with not so much as a warning, an act that Beckett found slightly distasteful given the new company - after all, it wasn't good business to portray those in your employ as child beaters. In any case, Beckett gave Mercer a disapproving glance as the clerk also stepped onto the main dekc, before turning back to look at Morgan once more, this time speaking in a more clear and crisper tone,

"As you are no doubt aware, we suspect Jack Sparrow to be currently hiding in Tortuga." The Chairman then indicated Keegan with a slight movement of his cane and a sideways nod of his head, "This is the key to capturing him."

He then directed his next words to the boy himself, but kept his gaze on Morgan and his men as he did so,

"Don't be shy, Master McAllister, step forward and explain to the good gentlemen here why you're so valuable."

Keegan:

Keegan found the sight before him rather amusing. On one ship stood the Chairman's men, uniformed and gleaming and elegant. On the other ship stood the other men, dressed in regular clothing and looking quite rough, but not much less in number. He thought it was interesting that a man so clean as Beckett would hire and associate a group that clearly wasn't.

It was easy enough walking across the plank that joined the two ships. Keegan had good balance even with the older man behind him propelling him forward. Just as he was about to step off to the deck of the other ship, he was pushed forward and his good balance was completely lost. He tumbled down to the wood and landed flat on his back, grimacing.

"As you are no doubt aware, we suspect Jack Sparrow to be currently hiding in Tortuga. This is the key to capturing him."

Keegan, still prone on the ground, turned his head around to see who Beckett was talking to. Not far away was a man a little less menacing than Beckett and Mercer, but considerably more capable of wringing Keegan's neck. This must be Rhett Morgan, the pirate hunter. Which, to Keegan, was about as good as being a pirate itself.

"Don't be shy, Master McAllister, step forward and explain to the good gentlemen here why you're so valuable."

With a sigh, Keegan lifted his head and sat up on the deck, but made no move to stand up further. He rubbed his head for a moment or two, combing his hand through his hair, before looking up at Morgan and smiling like a wolf once more. "Well apparently I'm a key, aren't I? And forgive me for not standing, sir, but upon smacking the ground my headache has flared up again thanks to Moody Mister Mercer."

He cracked his knuckles. "But it's a pleasure to meet you anyway, I'm sure."

Rhett:

"Captain Morgan, it is good to finally meet another who shares my views on piracy." He left a brief pause, before adding, "Or to be more specific, how to deal with it."

Rhett nodded with a smile, yes here was finally a man who understood what Rhett was trying to do. They were only doing it from two different positions; Beckett was the thinking one, making plans and deciding who ought to die first. Rhett was the one carrying out the plans, the one actually hunting who needed to be hunted. This reminded him of another pirate... whom he met last he went out hunting. Sean Brice, who had warned Rhett not to try to capture Jack Sparrow. Claiming that his superior was far worse than Lord Beckett. Rhett hardly believed that, he had heard about Beckett. He used people, and if he found them useless they'd most probably die because they knew too much and were likely to tell someone. But this was about capturing pirates, and Rhett and Beckett were on the same ship here, literally.

"As you are no doubt aware, we suspect Jack Sparrow to be currently hiding in Tortuga." The Chairman then indicated Keegan with a slight movement of his cane and a sideways nod of his head, "This is the key to capturing him."

Rhett now saw the man he had met in Port Royale, lead a young boy from one ship to the other. A boy... a young boy... how could he possible help capturing Sparrow better than Rhett could without such a boy? The man he met in Port Royale - who had never told his name to Rhett - pushed the boy so he fell on the deck. Beckett asked the boy to speak, apparantly the boy's name was McAllister. Another Scotsman he thought, or perhaps Irish? It didn't matter, for the boy had little or none manners at all. He didn't stand when he was spoken to, and not when he himself spoke either.

"Well apparently I'm a key, aren't I? And forgive me for not standing, sir, but upon smacking the ground my headache has flared up again thanks to Moody Mister Mercer."

Rhett sent the man from Port Royale a glance - so his name was Mercer - and rolled his eyes at the boy. He highly doubted the boy had a headache, but he could get one very quickly, if he wasn't careful. And Rhett was supposed to work with this boy? That seemed like very little fun, but if he didn't have any manners yet, he'd get them soon, that was for certain.

He cracked his knuckles. "But it's a pleasure to meet you anyway, I'm sure."

he raised a brow, and went to the boy, took his arm and hieved him up to stand. "Apparantly the headache isn't that bad." he said when he let go of the boy. Of course he could stand, he was just a boy trying to play tough. ".. and I highly doubt it's a pleasure to meet you - if what Lord Beckett says is true, and you're the key to capturing Sparrow, my guess is that you know the pirate. Which makes you no better yourself." he left the boy there and went back to where he stood before, and looked at Beckett once more.

"So... what exactly is the plan with the boy?"

Beckett:

Beckett smiled faintly as he watched Captain Morgan roughly 'cure' the boy's 'headache', and remained unmoving as he did so, his eyes simply following the action. He particularly liked Morgan's ideal that the boy was no better than Sparrow himself for associating with the pirate, and could see that he and the bloodthirsty pirate-hunter would get on very well indeed. When Morgan returned to his original stance and addressed Beckett once more concerning how the McAllister boy could possibly be of any use to them and the plan to apprehend Sparrow, the Chairman replied calmly and collectively with,

"The boy is to go ashore with you and your men. He will approach Sparrow and, through the means of his past experiences with the pirate, will convince him to go with him to the docks, where yourself and your fine crew can apprehend the pirate and bring him back here. Mr Mercer!"

The clerk stepped forward at the call of his name, dressed completely in black with the exception of the grey trim to his clothes and the white cravat he wore in a gentlemanly fashion. Beckett indicated Mercer to Morgan with his cane, and added to his original reply,

"Mr Mercer here will go with you and tail Master McAllister. Should the boy prove treacherous, he has orders to remedy that as a threat - something I have already detailed with our 'key' myself. When this business is over and done with, Sparrow's crew and ship are considered yours to keep and do with as you see fit once Sparrow is in my custody."

The Chairman then stepped a little closer to Morgan, so that he could lower his voice enough for the boy to not be able to hear what he said next, or at least he hoped he wouldn't hear,

"Try to keep the boy alive. Complications could arise from his untimely death. He is surprisingly well-connected."

Keegan:

Keegan's headache really was starting to come back, but of course no one believed him. He found it funny that people rarely believed him when he was actually telling the truth. His own parents had picked up on his acting ability and condemned his lying talent, but he had tricked them numerous times anyway. But Morgan wasn't a loving, trusting parent, and he hauled Keegan to his feet with ease. Keegan swayed slightly once he was standing, then shook his head to get rid of the dizziness.

"Apparantly the headache isn't that bad." he said. "...and I highly doubt it's a pleasure to meet you - if what Lord Beckett says is true, and you're the key to capturing Sparrow, my guess is that you know the pirate. Which makes you no better yourself."

Keegan laughed a little bit, looking down at his shirt and wiping some dust from the fabric. "Then I'm in proper company right now."

He idly listened as the plan was described, glancing over to Mercer and shaking his head. Mercer might be dressed all in black, but he still looked too clean and proper to blend into the masses of Tortuga. At least in Keegan's opinion. But then, maybe Keegan could use that to his advantage. Somehow.

Keegan continued to try and concoct a plan with what he knew of how it would go. Surely they were going to let him go up to Sparrow alone. If he was accompanied by anyone it would be too obvious, and if he was alone he could pretend to be in need of help. Sparrow knew his family was well off, he could offer money in return for a safe passage home, and Sparrow had a ship. Of course this was all just a story to get him down to the docks.

In the back of Keegan's mind, he wondered if he was really going to do it. He disliked Sparrow a great deal, but he loathed Beckett. Could he really help the creature capture a pirate who was, really, harmless?

Finally Keegan frowned, and he suddenly realized that Sparrow really was harmless. He was a pirate, yes, but so were all the other people milling around Tortuga. Most of them were probably much more dangerous than Sparrow to boot. Why was Beckett so hell-bent on capturing a bedraggled old fool?

He picked at a hole on his shirt as he remembered more conversations and finally understood. What's so damned special about that bloody compass?

"...his untimely death. He is surprisingly well-connected."

What?!

Keegan tried not to look up too quickly, and only lifted his head enough to see through the black curls hanging in front of his eyes. Beckett had gone over closer to Morgan, they were speaking about him, and it had the word "death" in there. That certainly couldn't be good. But Keegan hadn't heard the first part. Was there any danger, really? He was well-connected, among the navy and the nobles. If something happened to him, his parents, and maybe even Norrington, would try to find him. Word would get out he had disappeared, and people might make the connection of his disappearance with Beckett's leaving of Port Royal.

Still, that gave the boy little security. For all he really knew, they were planning his untimely death and would use it somehow among all the people he was connected with. Keegan looked back down at the hole in his shirt, glowering at his dirty feet.

Rhett:

Keegan laughed a little bit, looking down at his shirt and wiping some dust from the fabric. "Then I'm in proper company right now."

Rhett sent him an evil stare. Why was the boy so important? He nearly just made the mistake of calling Rhett - and Lord Beckett for that matter - a pirate! Now he would for certain teach the boy some manners later, but there wasn't time for it now. He listened closely as Beckett told him the entire plan. At least he didn't leave anything out, or at least it didn't sound like it. Most of the plan was good, and Rhett guessed that the part which involved himself catching the pirate and bringing him to the Endeavour, was something he would have to figure out. Which suited him quite well, since that left him to decide for himself just how it was going to happen.

He was a bit annoyed though that Mercer would have to come with them - he'd probably end up ruining the entire plan, a clerk didn't fit well into the Tortugan crowd at all! Unless he changed, he would have to keep a good distance to the boy, or else everything would indeed be ruined. And if he had to keep a good distance, there was a good chance of the boy escaping. Good thing I'm there then, Rhett thought to himself, smiling on the inside.

After Beckett had told him the plan, he stepped closer to Rhett and spoke in a low voice. "Try to keep the boy alive. Complications could arise from his untimely death. He is surprisingly well-connected."

He narrowed his eyes. Keep him alive? He glanced at the boy... well-connected, such a young boy? He didn't look well-connected, and certainly not better connected than Rhett himself. But he nodded after all, although very displeased with this little part of the plan.

"Very well... I shall try to follow that order, however with the boy's behaviour so far I'm suspecting it won't be easy. But I shall see that the plan is carried out like you just mentioned." adding in his mind, that the boy didn't deserve that Rhett followed the order.

Beckett:

"Your patience is appreciated, Captain." Beckett said as the volume of his voice returned to normal and he added, "Unless there are any more questions, I would deem it a perfect time to enforce this plan right away. One final thing, however."

He then tapped his cane on the deck once and, as if on cue, Lieutenant Greitzer turned around and beckoned two particular marines over to where the 'main players' were stood. The two specified marines carried between them a wide, but relatively short-heighted, box and then opened it up next to Beckett and Morgan. Inside were two projectiles - fireworks to be specific - and Beckett indicated to them both for Morgan's benefit before explaining to the pirate-hunting Captain,

"These are your fail-safes, courtesy of my friends in Singapore. This one," He held up the first of the two fireworks, which had a blue ribbon on it, "Is to be lit and fired into the sky when you apprehend Sparrow. We will then move into position to stop the Black Pearl and the rest of its crew from escaping." He put down the first one and picked up the second firework, which had a red ribbon on it, "And this one is to be fired should something go wrong and you require immediate assistance. I will have Lieutenant Greitzer and a full company of marines ready to deploy should the need arise."

Beckett placed the red-ribboned firework back in the box, which was promptly closed and handed over to one of Morgan's crewmen by Greitzer, before turning to Mercer and saying,

"Mr Mercer, are you fully prepared for your role in this?"

Mercer's only response was to open out one side of his jacket to reveal three pistols lined up in seperate holsters running down the inside of his jacket, before closing it and opening the other side to reveal the exact same set-up. Beckett made a faux-disapproving expression and said in a mock-disappointed tone,

"Is that all you need, Mr Mercer?"

"It'll be satisfactory, sir." Was the clerk's response.

Beckett nodded and returned his gaze to Captain Morgan before saying,

"If that is all, Captain?"

Keegan:

"These are your fail-safes, courtesy of my friends in Singapore."

Keegan couldn't help but look up and tilt his head to the side in curiosity as the strange box was brought to the deck. He also couldn't help but edge a little bit closer to have a better look. Keegan had never seen fireworks before, so these strange tubes just looked like flimsy canisters. He had heard of fireworks though. They had gunpower in them, so they were still dangerous. As Beckett explained them, Keegan was surprised to know they could actually change different colors. He hadn't known gunpowder could have any color at all, except perhaps orange and yellow from when something exploded.

He put to memory what the different colored canisters meant, and raised a brow when he realized the only thing differentiating them were the ribbons. Maybe that could come into play as well. Somehow.

He leaned away when the box was closed and glanced at Mercer with boredom as the two men talked. He didn't make any sort of expression when Mercer opened his coat and revealed his six guns, though inwardly he was frowning. One gun would have been plenty trouble, but six was just plain problematic. Still, Mercer stood out, and with six guns on him, he could be a target for any drunkard on Tortuga. If said drunkard knew about those guns.

Keegan drummed his fingers along the waist of his unraveled breeches. There were far too many variables to come up with a solid plan. He would just have to wait this one out, and hope for the best. The "best" in this case simply getting out alive.

Rhett:

Rhett looked at the projectiles with the fireworks, and made a mental note about the colors of each. It was smart actually, but he also feared that sending up the fireworks would draw much attention to the plan. And Sparrow probably had many friends in Tortuga, eager to help him should he be captured. That was very likely to be the reason why he had escaped the East India Company several times. Silently he nodded after the cases were closed and handed over to Rhetts crew. Rhett looked at Roberts, and Roberts knew the look meant that he was to guard the fireworks. Soon he disappeared below deck together with a few other men carrying the box.

he then turned to look at Beckett who now spoke to the clerk, Mr. Mercer, who would stay with Rhett and his men. He surpressed a laugh when he saw the pistols lined up in Mercers jacket. Firstly that was a stupid place to hold such things - what if someone bumped into Mercer, and one of them went off? Other than that, why did he need six of them?! Rhett ran a hand through his hair, he had to do something to keep himself from laughing.

"If that is all, Captain?"

he had hardly even noticed that Beckett had returned his gaze to Rhett himself. "I suppose it is... if you have no further instructions, then I say we rid the oceans of a few more pirates."

Rhett turned to look at the boy. He had seen the fireworks too, which wasn't wise either. Rhett realized that he thought the plan had been fine to begin with, but as more and more of it was revealed, it seemed downright ridiculous! Apparantly Beckett planned to draw as much attention to this hunt as possible... well, Rhett couldn't do much about it, other than try to draw attention away from what he thought seemed stupid. He shook his head realizing he had stared at the boy for far too long. But what to do with him? He glanced at Mercer.

"Well... Mr. Mercer, if you are to follow us, then let us retreat to my cabin until we reach the docks again. And bring the boy too."

he nodded a goodbye to Beckett, and lead the way to his own cabin situated just below the helm. He opened the door and waited for the other two to enter.

Beckett:

OOC: Six guns = Six chances of hitting someone without taking forever to reload
Though yeah I guess having them on the inside of a jacket is a bit stupid Didn't quite think it through....though Mercer is mostly going to be sticking to shadowed alleys and the likes, so probably won't run the risk of people knocking into him.

Beckett returned the nod and, with a quick glance at Keegan, turned and began his return to the Endeavour across the boarding planks. Greitzer also granted Morgan a nod before following in His Lordship's wake, with the marines doing the same. Mercer, on the other hand, stepped forward and, after shoving Keegan in the direction that Morgan indicated, proceeded to step closer to the pirate-hunting captain as he stood beckoning the two into his cabin and said in a low voice so that only the captain could hear his London accent,

"Don't launch the blue rocket until Sparrow's on the ship with no hope of escape. Beckett won't appreciate his hopes being raised falsely."

Then, without waiting for an answer, the stone-faced clerk stepped over the threshold of the cabin and inside. Glancing around to take in the sight of the room, Mercer raised an unimpressed eyebrow, but kept it hidden from Morgan seeing. It wouldn't do to offend Beckett's business associate.

***

"Have the men on constant standby within the hour," Beckett ordered Greitzer the second the boarding ramps were lifted from the Ocean's Blood, "And have someone on lookout duty keep their eyes firmly peeled for those fireworks. If the red one is fired, head for the port before informing me."

"Aye sir," The Lieutenant replied before setting off to relay the orders.

Beckett look down from the stern to the Ocean's Blood and he mused to himself silently. Rhett Morgan was meant to be the best, and if he couldn't deliver Sparrow to the Company, then who would?

Someone with as much incentive to see Sparrow apprehended as I do, Beckett thought, Though I doubt there is anything of this world that could match that.

Keegan:

"Well... Mr. Mercer, if you are to follow us, then let us retreat to my cabin until we reach the docks again. And bring the boy too."

Keegan was perfectly prepared to walk into the cabin on his own, but Mercer had to add his own incentive and shoved him along. Keegan growled to himself and was just about ready to shove the older man back, but figured that wouldn't be wise right then.

He walked into the captain's cabin and sighed through his nose before rubbing his eyes. The fireworks had been taken down below, there was no way to get to them now, so they would be useless. He tossed using them out of his plan, at least for the moment. In all honesty his plan hadn't formed into anything yet. Sparrow might not even be at Tortuga, with any luck. Or, actually, that might be bad, because then they might keep Keegan even longer.

Rhett:

(( OOC - Rhett is not very fond of pistols in the first place, so six of them seems odd to him... ))

"Don't launch the blue rocket until Sparrow's on the ship with no hope of escape. Beckett won't appreciate his hopes being raised falsely."

"If the plan works, I doubt Sparrow will have any hope of escape from the moment I lay my hands upon him." Rhett replied and let Mercer walk past him into the cabin, shoving the boy in front of him in there too. Rhett closed the door behind him and went to the desk.

"Please sit if you like." he said to Mercer, not even offering the boy a glance just yet. Rhett didn't sit however, he waited a bit until they had both taken in the cabin; with the bed at one side, the desk in the middle of it with a chair on each side, and shelves built into the sides and cabinets down the back, where there were also windows. He looked out, saw the waves outside moving and knew Roberts had managed to keep the fireworks safe, and made it to the deck again - they were on their way back to Tortuga.

He then turned back to his guests, and looked curiously at the boy. "So... you know Sparrow? I am curious, how does a young boy like you - apparently a well-connected one - come to be associated with a wanted pirate?" he himself leaned on the edge of the desk, not feeling like sitting down. They would be at Tortuga soon enough, they weren't far out on the water.

Beckett:

OOC: I'm going to make a cheap cop-out concerning the pistols in the jacket thing

Mercer took Morgan's offer a seat and sat down comfortable, before pulling out four of the six guns from his jacket, two from each side, and laying them on the desk. Having made his little spectacle of carrying so many guns in one place, the clerk now had to place the other four in places where they wouldn't run the risk of going off and blasting a gaping hole in his chest. The two short-barrelled ones were placed in the specialist compartments in his sleeves, and Mercer made a note of letting Keegan see exactly how many places upon the clerk's person a weapon could be hidden. With the two small pistols hidden in his sleeves, Mercer ignored the final two remaining on the desk, deciding that they would simply hang from the back of his belt, hidden under the tail of his jacket, and so he would have to put them on when he stood up again.

However, Beckett appreciated it when Mercer made an effort to appear the ultimate assassin when it came to those whom the Chairman wished to inspire fear into, and so he continued to make a spectacle for the boy's benefit. He bent down and reached into his right boot, extracting from it a lethal-looking knife. He then proceeded to place that on the table before asking Captain Morgan,

"What's your favoured weapon then, Captain?"

Continuing as he listened to the captain's reply, another knife was extracted from his belt and placed next to the previous one, and finally, to add the icing to his deadly cake, Mercer removed his sword-scabbard from where it hung loosely from his waist over the side of the chair, and placed that also next to the assembled weapons. Whilst 'unarming' himself, Mercer had been sure to make clear two points, one for each of his fellow cabin inhabitants. To Keegan, he clearly wished to inspire fear and intimidate the boy, whilst with Captain Morgan he simply wished to share the amusement at the boy's expense with what the clerk sadistically hoped would be a terrified reaction from the lad.

Keegan:

Keegan remained standing, and would have remained standing even if he were offered a seat. Seeing that he wasn't offered one anyway, it was a moot point. He stood with his back to the wall, making sure to keep Mercer and Morgan in plain sight.

It was easy to see Mercer as he began laying out all the weapons he had managed to conceal inside that black coat. Keegan was amazed he didn't clank around like a walking blacksmith's shop, but Mercer probably had a special coat and special hiding places. In truth all the deadly weapons being spread out on the desk addled him more than a little bit, but he made sure that none of his nervousness showed on his face or in his stance. He had become very skilled at concealing his true feelings from others, and more often than not his bark was much worse than his bite. Then again, his bark was usually enough to get him out of certain situations, so his bite had little experience.

Finally Mercer was done, and he talked to Morgan, and it was clear they were both just trying to scare the boy. They were succeeding, but Keegan didn't let them know. It was actually rather interesting to know how each man might fight, and might also come in handy further on.

"So... you know Sparrow? I am curious, how does a young boy like you - apparently a well-connected one - come to be associated with a wanted pirate?"

Keegan turned his gaze to Morgan, then furrowed his brows and twisted his lips in an unsure gesture. He hunkered his shoulders and dropped his head, like he was reluctant to just tell exactly how he knew Sparrow. With a sigh, he looked up again, his eyes full of tired defiance, and then he shrugged. Inwardly he was cackling with glee. He was going to have his fun while he could.

In all seriousness he grumbled, "Well, I should know him. He's my father, after all."

Rhett:

Rhett watched Mercer move all his weapons from the jacket to the table, and then placing them elsewhere on his body. It was rather interesting to see, how many weapons a clerk would carry on his person. While Mercer fiddled with his weapons, Rhett sent a hidden glance to the boy, surely he would know to behave better, once he saw the great danger he was in. Being with one man very heavily armed, and another not so heavily armed but probably even more dangerous.

In all seriousness he grumbled, "Well, I should know him. He's my father, after all."

Rhett couldn't help but letting out a laugh this time. "Although I'm certain that said pirate has several children in various towns, I highly doubt you're one of them - if he's as cunning as they say, I would believe his children were too. And if you were cunning, you wouldn't be here, would you?" he said with a grin, the boy wasn't very old and thought he was more clever than he actually was. But really, how could anyone associating with pirates be expected to be clever - even Sparrow? He returned to looking at Mercer who seemed to have finished replacing his weapons.

"What's your favoured weapon then, Captain?"

Rhett smiled, and drew the cutlass from the sheath. It had been in use yesterday night, and it had killed captain Kenridge not long ago. He noticed the blood from the fight on the streets yesterday, wasn't entirely wiped off yet. "I prefer blades... pistols cause such a mess, which is why I rarely use them. Clean cuts with great bloodloss seem to work best for me. I expect you saw me at the duel yesterday, since you caught me right after I finished." he looked at the shining blade in his hand for a moment more, then placed it back where it belonged. And right now, when the plan still wasn't set to work, it didn't belong in the boy's chest. Maybe later, he would let it slip, even though Beckett had told Rhett that the boy should be kept alive. Or that he should try... but that didn't mean succeeding, he thought with a flash of blood on his mind.

Beckett:

"Well, I should know him. He's my father, after all."

Mercer dropped the knife he had been holding when he heard these words, and it landed heavily on the wooden floor below, narrowly missing his left foot. His eyes widened and he looked at the boy with a sharp gaze, as if urging him to say that what he had just said wasn't true. However, the situation turned slightly embarrassing for the clerk when Captain Morgan laughed revelation off and pointed out that the boy couldn't be Sparrow's son,

"Although I'm certain that said pirate has several children in various towns, I highly doubt you're one of them - if he's as cunning as they say, I would believe his children were too. And if you were cunning, you wouldn't be here, would you?"

Reassured, but slightly embarrassed, Mercer relaxed back in his seat and pulled the knife from the floor. His eyes were then fixed menacingly on the boy, and it was clear to all, or at least he hoped it was, that he would love nothing more than to gut the boy then and there for his insolence. Luckily, however, Mercer was spared the temptation of going against orders and slitting the lad's throat when Morgan came back to his original question concerning his favoured weapon and replied with a grim smile that suggested to the clerk that the pirate hunter was as every bit bloodthirsty as his reputation suggested,

"I prefer blades... pistols cause such a mess, which is why I rarely use them. Clean cuts with great bloodloss seem to work best for me. I expect you saw me at the duel yesterday, since you caught me right after I finished."

Mercer nodded at this, before picking up one of the pistols he had left on the table and aiming it at lantern hanging from the cabin's ceiling. He had no intention of shooting the light, but simply decided to keep his perceptions focused as his sights locked on to the candle's flame. Maintaining this stance as if he were going to actually shoot at something, he continued to look down the barrel of his pistol as he replied to Morgan in his nonchalant tone,

"I did see your duel. Messy business, not to mention the old man died. Shame that." He pulled his face away from the pistol, made some unnecessary adjustment, then returned to his aiming stance before continuing, "I've always been a man of the pistol, me. Not as stealthy as the blade, but far easier to use...and master. It takes good balance and coordination to dominate the pistol, after all."

Keegan:

Keegan wasn't really sure how his words were going to be met, but he was utterly delighted when Mercer actually lost the grip on one of his knives. The boy was very disappointed when it didn't hurt either of the men in any way, but the reaction was satisfying enough. Morgan, on the other hand, simply laughed at him.

"Although I'm certain that said pirate has several children in various towns, I highly doubt you're one of them - if he's as cunning as they say, I would believe his children were too. And if you were cunning, you wouldn't be here, would you?"

Keegan scoffed and rolled his eyes. "Please. Cunning has nothing to do with it. Sparrow has gotten out of every one of his predicaments purely on luck, as well as the stupidity of his captors." He smirked at Morgan and Mercer. "So I guess we'll just have to wait and see how much like him I really am," he added, smug as ever.

Wow, talk about looking death in the face. Keegan knew what he was doing was really rather stupid, but he couldn't stop himself. If he didn't try to be nonchalant and defiant he was worried his fear would really win him over and he would collapse into a shaking, frightened child. He was sorely tempted to just curl up into a ball when the men continued talking about their weapon of choice and showed them off. He saw the blood gleam off Morgan's sword, and the light glint off Mercer's gun. If they wanted, both could turn to him and kill him right then.

If he thought about the bloodstains or the steady gun, he knew he would lose it. So Keegan turned his thoughts to other things. The fireworks on the ship, his upcoming assignment, how to find Jack, and most importantly, how to get out of this alive. And he would get out, or he would defend himself. He had never killed anyone before but he was determined to get home. He had siblings to watch and play with, parents to annoy, friends to joke with....

He almost let out a loud laugh as he realized how much he had gone through in just a few months. In another couple of months, he would turn thirteen. He wasn't even a teenager yet and he was probably having the adventure of his life. If he even lived to be thirteen.

Rhett:

the boy continued to play smart, to Rhetts great annoyance. If there was anything they could do, to shut him up and make him show his true colors. Well, he could always be ripped open, that would surely show his true colors, but playing with the boy's mind was just as fun.

"So I guess we'll just have to wait and see how much like him I really am,"

"I guess so... but I have rather low expectations..." he stopped with a grin. "Plus, if I remember correctly, Sparrow is not even your name. And I have not yet met anyone, who spoke about their father using only his last name before."

Rhett shook his head at the boy with a superior look in his eyes, then turned back to Mercer. He actually found it rather interesting to have this conversation with Beckett's man. It was very rare that Rhett met a person, as eager to kill as himself, and it was interesting to compare their methods. Rhett of course was certain, that his way worked the best, although Mercer did seem to have some fine points too. And he simply enjoyed discussing these things, especially with a young boy who clearly had more than enough self-confidence than he needed. Rhett was surprised to see the boy didn't break down yet, but managed to appear as cool as ever. He only hoped that inside the boy was already wishing himself back home.

"I did see your duel. Messy business, not to mention the old man died. Shame that."

Rhett shrugged. "He chose to fight me... and he was the one wishing a fight to the death - I only did what he asked me to do." he said but there was a hint of a smile on his lips. He had enjoyed the fight, although it had seemed rather pointless from the beginning - his opponent would have died either way, and it didn't matter who it was. He had only fought because he had to, but he had another kill on his mind and at least that made him feel good. Kenridge deserved it, enough said about that.

"I've always been a man of the pistol, me. Not as stealthy as the blade, but far easier to use...and master. It takes good balance and coordination to dominate the pistol, after all."

"Aha..." Rhett said and looked at the pistol. "I suppose it depends on what you prefer mastering. It also takes much skill to use a sword properly. Yes, anyone can pierce another's heart with a blade, but I find the simple game before death occurs just as interesting as death itself."

Beckett:

Mercer's eyes fell closed slightly and he nodded his head once as an indication that he conceded Morgan's point as being fair. So Captain Morgan was man of the fight, rather than the kill? An interesting notion, and one that stirred the clerk's curiosity, however, he did not choose to share the opinion. Since most of his kills were enemies of Beckett rather than of himself, Mercer preferred to be done with the act on the most efficient and quickest way possible, and a bullet to the head often served such a purpose. If there was someone who crossed Mercer personally, however, the clerk was open to the idea of prolonging their death in order to gain from it the kind of satisfaction that Morgan implied he received with every pirate he slew with his blade.

As for Morgan's justification for killing the old man, Mercer cared little for it. The reasons behind the act were not important to him, all that mattered was the end result, and as such the end result had been one that had impressed the clerk. Morgan had killed his ancient opponent in an accurate, if somewhat gory, way, causing a wound from which the man had had no hope of recovering from, and was therefore dead within a few short minutes. Yes, Mercer certainly could see why Beckett had chosen Morgan now - he was every bit as bloodthirsty as Mercer was, but with the added benefit of years of hunting pirates, and not just stabbing or shooting political enemies like Mercer had done. That wasn't to say Mercer was inexperienced in 'dealing' with dangerous criminals - far from it in fact, given Beckett's lack of tolerance for those brought into East India Trading Company custody charged with crimes related to piracy.

"How much longer till we reach the port?" The clerk asked Morgan, quietly sure that it wasn't very long at all now, before turning to Keegan and adding, "You remember what it is you're to do, right?"

Keegan:

"I guess so... but I have rather low expectations..." he stopped with a grin. "Plus, if I remember correctly, Sparrow is not even your name. And I have not yet met anyone, who spoke about their father using only his last name before."

Keegan curled his lips back in disgust. "As if I would take his name. The circumstances of my birth and the relationship between me and my father is really none of your business anyway." He shrugged. "I just answered your question, is all." Whether or not they believed him didn't really matter, he was only speaking thus to have some fun with them. It had all been worth it just to see Mercer slip up, and Keegan would be grinning about that for a long time to come.

He continued to ignore their talk of death and blood and guns and swords, knowing that paying full attention would drive him mad. His eyes were glazed over for most of their talk, but he was tempted to ask for his own weapon. He almost did, but then decided against it. They would probaly refuse, and if they agreed, he might get it lodged in his leg or somewhere else he didn't appreciate.

"How much longer till we reach the port?" The clerk asked. "You remember what it is you're to do, right?"

Keegan took a deep breath and frowned. "We get to the port, I go off and find Jack, and...bring him back, I suppose. Do you want me to bring him back to the same port? Shouldn't it be somewhere private?"

Rhett:

"How much longer till we reach the port?"

Rhett looked out the window, a bit disappointed that the talk about how to kill and why had ended. But Mercer was right, they had things to do, they had a pirate to catch. The boy spoke to Rhett again, claiming the matter between him and his socalled father was none of his business - which was of course true, especially since Rhett didn't believe for one tiny instant that they were actually related.

"If I'm not mistaken, we're just about there..." he said and clapped his cutlass in the belt. To be in use soon, he thought with a smile. Sparrow would have to live, but his crew... oh Rhett could hardly wait!

The boy recited the plan for Mercer, but Rhett didn't feel it was up to him to answer. He didn't make the plan, he was sure Mercer knew the details far better than himself. He only had to catch the pirate. "I'll be on deck watching the docking." he noted to the two, and went out.

Sure enough, they had reached the docks again. Roberts saw Rhett before Rhett saw Roberts, and came running down from the helm. "Captain... how many men do you need? Do you need me?" he asked with a voice that told Rhett, that Roberts did look forwards to a little bit of fun with killing pirates too.

"What I need you to do... once we have left the ship, you'll bring the fireworks to my cabin. And keep your eyes open for our return, so that we can fire the moment Sparrow is aboard the ship." he said, it sounded fair. "Don't worry, once it's all over and done with, we'll all take care of the Black Pearl together." Rhett smiled and Roberts nodded. The plan seemed fair to him. They both looked to the docks, the boarding ramp was about to be placed to the dock which meant they were ready. Mercer and the boy would probably notice by themselves, so they could leave soon and carry out the instructions.

Beckett:

OOC: Perhaps Keegan could post in here one more time so that we've all posted our "moving over" posts, then jump into the 'To Catch A Sparrow' one

IC ~

"Do you want me to bring him back to the same port? Shouldn't it be somewhere private?" The boy asked when he recited what it was he had been tasked with.

"Same dock. Morgan'll know what to do." Was the short reply by the clerk before he turned to listen to Morgan answer his question concerning the distance to Tortuga.

"If I'm not mistaken, we're just about there..."

Mercer nodded at Morgan and stood from his chair as the Captain left the cabin. Fixing a grim look on Keegan, the clerk picked up his sword - a small sword typical of the age - and reattached the scabbard to his belt, before checking that the pistols in his jacket and sleeves were secure. Satisfied, Mercer picked up his remaining two pistols and placed them in holsters on the back of his belt, which was then covered by the tail of his jacket. The long ornate knife that had been dropped at the boy's 'revelation' about Sparrow being his 'father' was then placed in a small holster on his belt on the opposite side to where his scabbard now hung. Finally, as a last act of preparation, he picked up his black tricorn hat from where it had been placed upon the table, and put it on his head before turning to Keegan and gesturing the door,

"Get a move on." Were the clerk's short, grim words.

He then stepped out himself and onto the main deck, where he could see Morgan speaking with one of his crew and other sailors were preparing the boarding planks that would serve as their way of going from ship to dock. The clerk then glanced up ahead of the ship to see the port of Tortuga in its entirety, and although it was an impressive sight at this time, the sounds emanating from it were enough to put the clerk off the place instantly - drunken pirates were never good for tourism after all. Approaching the boarding planks as they were put down on one of the jetties at the docks of Tortuga, Mercer looked back and gave Morgan a nod to signify that he was going to set out right away, before looking back for Keegan to leave first ahead of him.

Keegan:

"Same dock. Morgan'll know what to do."

Keegan hid his grimace at that reply and wordlessly followed the men back outside. If the docks at Tortuga were anything like they were in Port Royal, they were busy. Trying to capture a pirate might cause some sort of commotion, and who knows what that might ultimately result in.

Then again, some kind of commotion might be just what Keegan needed.

He approached the side of the ship and rested his hands on the railing, gaping at the port of Tortuga. It certainly was busy, but in its own way. Keegan could see throngs of rough pirates walking around, some tottering with intoxication, some shoving and pushing. Those shoves and pushes usually ended up in some kind of fistfight, and if it escalated further, weapons were drawn. Gunshots pierced the air every few moments with chilling regularity. There were whorehouses and taverns packed right up to the docks, as if taunting the landing pirates and seeing if sex or liquor would be dealt with first.

The people were certainly ratty, at least. Keegan would blend in that respect, but he noticed there weren't any children around that he could see. He was shorter than most adults, and his height and stature might make him stick out. Then again, it also might just make him invisible. He didn't think any priate would take notice of him in his sorry state with no weapons nearby.

That reminded him he needed to get one. He saw quite a few bodies in different corners of the port, and there were probably even more further in. If they were sleeping or unconcious or even dead, they might be easy to rifle through, if they hadn't been already. But now the most pressing matter at hand: where to find Sparrow. The port was surprisingly large, and it might take a while to find him. Plus Keegan could only poke around so many places before he put himself even more at risk.

And through all this thought, Keegan was struggling very hard to keep his stomach settled.
