Handler: Brendan, Norrington (under those accounts or with the Royal Navy & Marines account)

Plot: He'll come into use during and after the Mutiny

History: Arthur Cartwright came to Port Royal as a newly-commissioned second lieutenant, roughly six months before the promotion of the squadron's senior Navy officer. He proved his mettle as a quick-thinking officer during the pirate attack and performed well during the ensuing pursuit, with all of its attendant oddities. In the aftermath of the aborted hanging of the pirate Sparrow, Cartwright did not particularly distinguish himself, but he treated the events as learning experiences.

When his original captain resigned, Cartwright was promoted to first lieutenant on the basis of date of commission. He threw himself into his new duties, but it was a struggle. Being only twenty-two, he had a difficult time managing the many tasks that were now his to attend to. More change was in store for him, however. A mutiny had broken out, an indirect result of the arrival of the East India Trading Company. Cartwright was the first to discover the body of Captain Forsythe and it rattled him to his soul.

The murder of his captain meant that Cartwright himself was now, in effect, Captain of Marines. This unexpected and unwelcome change of circumstance was one that the young Londoner would have given anything to refuse, but his sense of duty compelled him to accept the reality that he was now in command of the mutinying garrison. Despite his initial hesitation, Cartwright managed to rally a squad of loyalist marines to defend the fort's work-offices until the daring plot undertaken by Commodore Norrington succeeded and captured loyalists were freed from the dungeon. The fighting turned quickly to the loyalists' favour and the mutiny was soon after put down.

Life was far from easy for Cartwright in the following weeks. Interferences from Kingston officers who had come with reinforcements, the revelation about the past desertion of one of his corporals, a court-martial to punish that corporal, and the innumerable difficulties of keeping the remains of his battalion under control; the burden of responsibility was not one that Cartwright expected to land so fully on him, so soon. The unexpected death of his first lieutenant after the end of Corporal McIntyre's court-martial stunned him completely. He is now without any officer to support him in leading his marines.

Additional info:

Personality:
The marine captain is in nearly all ways a proper gentleman. Well-mannered, affable, and honest, Cartwright believes in the best of every man, no matter what their station in life. He is still somewhat naive, given his young age and unusually swift ascension to his present rank, but he applies himself fully to his duties and devotedly looks after the welfare his marines. Though young and on his first commission, he has proven himself competent and intelligent and his company of marines is well-managed. This is, of course, due in part to Sergeant Myles' assistance.

Captain Collins' resignation stunned him. The unexpected turn of events resulted in his own promotion, but at the cost of his sense of security. He had considered the Yorkshireman to be a sort of surrogate father and with his departure, Cartwright's faith in the inherent goodness of men was shaken. Knowing the reasons for it, albeit after the fact, did not help. Like the other officers, Cartwright was aware of the unhappy mood of the garrison, but unlike them, he had heard whisperings of impending action against the East India Company. These he kept to himself, foolishly hoping them to be false.

False they were not, as he and the rest of the town discovered, to their great loss. The mutiny saw him become the battalion's acting-captain, a promotion he hated for the circumstances that caused it. Cartwright is determined to do right by his marines but his job is not an easy one. It is almost too much responsibility for a man so young.
