Most men were silent as they entered the pirate port, waiting for their captain to say or do something so they would know how to react. But Rhett stood silent by the wheel, while the rest were on deck, and he stared at Tortuga. He wasn’t too fond of his situation – it had been days since they left Port Royal, and he hated to have done that. Not that he hated to sail or anything, he loved that nearly beyond anything else, but he hated the way they had left. Like rats leaving a sinking ship. Cowards. Fleeing when they should be fighting… but fighting for what cause? Fighting for survival of himself and the woman he planned to marry. But he hadn’t done that. He had left Port Royal behind, Port Royal and all he cared about in that town, only to come here. To the docks of Tortuga. But it hadn't made much sense to do anything else - of course, they could just have roamed the oceans for a few weeks and then return to Port Royal, but Rhett hated to have nothing to do. And so he had decided to come here, although hopefully they wouldn't need to be here for long. Soon the ship had docked and he walked down amongst his men.

“So we’re back at Tortuga, as you’ve all noticed, but hopefully it’ll be a short stay. I expect to see you all on deck tomorrow at daybreak, to give you further notice about what’s to happen. You know the drill – 10 stay behind to guard the ship while the rest are in town, but work in shifts so noone get too tired or bored with their position… and you know how to sort it out. Find out who’ll stay and go for now, and then you’re all dismissed until tomorrow.” Rhett said to his men with Roberts standing right behind him. The men didn’t answer Rhett, which was a sign of them beginning to sort out who would guard the ship, and he nodded to himself. So it had come to this… he turned to Roberts with a small sigh. “I suppose I’ll be off then – you coming with me?”

“Don’t look so annoyed, as you said, hopefully it’ll be a short stay.” Roberts said with a little assuring smile to his captain. Rhett hated pirates and he hated to have to stay in a pirate port without being able to kill them all… which was probably the reason why he looked so annoyed. That, and then the fact that Roberts also knew his captain still hated the thought of fleeing. “I’ll come with you.” Roberts then said, and the two men went to each their cabin to get their things… Rhett adding a few blades to the one by his side; one in each boot and one attached inside his left sleeve, plus one hidden in the coat. One could never bring too many blades when one walked among pirates. Soon after the two met on deck, and were off into the town. Rhett glanced at the note in his hand. Make it to the Black Cat Cove tavern when you arrive… he didn’t know this port well, and was amazed to turn around the corner of a street and seeing the tavern in question in front of him. He nodded to Roberts, and the two went inside. Pirate tavern… filthy, filled with outlaws and scum, filled with wenches and the likes. He tried not to wrinkle his nose and went to the counter.

“Hey…” Rhett said, but when there was no answer from the barkeep standing further down the counter, he took a breath in. “Hey!” He now yelled and the man came to him with a displeased look on his face, staring at Rhett. “I’m here to find the captain of the Dark Maiden… Sean Brice? Is he present?”

Sean rubbed his eyes and yawned as he stretched out on the bed a little. The sun had been spilling through the closed shutters of the room for a while now, but he had chosen to ignore it until this point. It seemed to be a mutual decision between him and the woman lying next to him. It was an interesting feeling, having the warmth of Caitlyn’s skin against his while the warm rays of the sun danced across his face, and it wasn’t a sensation he found any reason to hurry away from. Without another yawn, the pirate captain pulled his arm away from where it was wrapped around the woman, his fingers softly caressing her stomach as he did so. Rolling off of the bed, Sean began the arduous process of tracking down all of his clothes from various places in the room and got dressed.

Leaving the room shortly afterwards, he made his way down the steps of tavern, stretching out the last bit of sleep that was clinging to his muscles. Giving the bartender a nod, Sean sat down on one of the stools and was handed a plate of hard bread and some fruit. It wasn’t really the greatest meal he had ever had, but he usually took up any opportunity to eat fresh fruit when he could. That sort of thing didn’t really survive very well on ships, which gave even places like this a bit of a draw to him. Aside from the fact that it was near the docks and not the most highly frequented place in Tortuga, of course. Finishing his meal, Sean paid for it and Caitlyn’s, which would guarantee she receive one, even if she chose not to eat it. He had learned, over the day that they had been here, that the woman was not entirely accustomed to the rough manner of life that was necessary for a pirate. He didn’t expect her to be, though, and she was learning quite a few things as she went along, which was good.

A little while passed and Sean, probably altogether too casually, leaned against the railing on the upper balcony of the Black Cat, looking down the patrons mulling about. Most of them were Maiden crew, but there were enough assorted others to keep it from being a ‘private’ tavern. His mug of rum sat on the table behind him, not really touched. He ordered the beverage, and drank some of it, for appearance purposes only, aside from the fact that he had not been up entirely long enough to enjoy the strong alcohol. While he couldn’t say he didn’t enjoy rum, Sean also understood the importance of having a clarity of mind when dealing in Tortuga. Most people here did not posses such a thing, which was really of benefit to him. A small smile crossed his face as he watched Rhett Morgan saunter into the tavern. The man was hardly discrete and he stood out like a sore thumb in the company of pirates. Most pirates, anyway.

Sean’s boots echoed lightly as he walked down the steps of the stairs to the main tavern floor. He turned to face the other captain, leaning his hand on his hilt of his sword as he struck a fairly casual pose. ”Present in the flesh, Rhett Morgan.” The pirate smirked a little, ”You got here quicker then I expected. Manage to finally figure out how to coax some speed out of that box you call a ship?” Sean grinned to indicate he was joking, even though he knew the man would take exception to having his ship insulted, ”You got my note, I assume?”

The barkeep didn’t have time to answer, before Rhett out of the corner of his eye saw a well known figure come down the steps. Brice stopped with a hand on his sword and Rhett surpressed the urge to roll his eyes. Sean Brice enjoyed to look like he was the best at everything, didn’t he? Well at least they had that in common then.

”You got her quicker then I expected. Manage to finally figure out how to coax some speed out of that box you call a ship?”

Judging by the grin on the pirate’s face, he was obviously joking, but Rhett didn’t think it much of a joke at all. Like his ship wasn’t fast! He’d caught up with and killed more pirates than Sean Brice would even dare to guess, and he should be lucky to live still. Or perhaps not that lucky anymore, considering the two perhaps weren’t friends, but at least acquaintances now. You didn’t kill an acquaintance like this, unless there was a very good reason.

”You got my note, I assume?”

Rhett nodded and leaned against the counter behind him. “Got it a short while ago, but didn’t have a chance to leave before I was suddenly all but forced to do so.” Rhett responded, not sure if he wanted to go into details about that. In fact he didn’t, it was bad enough to have fled, but then have a person like Sean Brice mock him because of it – because he could just imagine Sean doing that, with the comment he just made about the Ocean’s Blood – he wouldn’t put himself through that. He was already at a pirate port, he didn’t need a loss of temper. Although... maybe a brawl would do him good, a little fighting to get all his aggression out, and then he could remain calm afterwards. He hadn’t fought or killed anyone for far too long, and add to that that he hadn’t slept with any women either. But for now, he preferred to keep his mind clear.

“So, what’s the reason why you needed me here? I got the idea that you like to sort out problems on your own, so I was surprised to receive a note like that.” He continued to change the subject, and glanced around. “Maybe we should sit somewhere, it does seem a tad silly to just stand here and discuss those matters of importance you’ve got on your mind.”

Caitlyn rolled over in the rented bed, becoming more aware of the empty space beside her. She had felt when Sean had woken and gotten up to get dressed, but she hadn't stirred or wakened completely; the security of his embrace had put her in a deeper, more restful sleep than she had experienced in a long time, especially after the incident in Port Royale with the Carringtons. She felt herself growing more accustomed to a life she dictated on her own, with only the occasional restriction from her responsibilities to the Dark Maiden and to Sean; they were, however, responsibilities she enjoyed largely, as the freedom they granted was more precious than anything she had ever possessed. It was becoming very easy for her to understand why Sean lived this life, despite the danger around every corner and the limitations it posed.

The warm spot on the sheets that Sean had left when he got up was quickly cooling off and the cold air on her bare skin gave Caidy a chill that forced her out of her dozing with a mournful groan. Clutching the sheets to her bare chest, she sat up, pushing her tangled curls out of her face and sighing loudly as the sleep cleared from her eyes. The light streaming through the shutters gave away the time as late morning to early afternoon, much later than Caidy usually allowed herself to sleep; perhaps it was the oddity of sleeping on land after so many nights on the sea that had kept her sleeping. Perhaps it was the previous nights activity; either way, Caidy felt oddly refreshed and ready to face the new day.

After scrounging up all her clothing from various parts of the room, Caidy quicky dressed and de-tangled her dark locks, arranging her hair in a thick braid. Satisfied that she didn't look completely ravaged, she left the room and made her way to the tavern proper, stopping at the balcony after hearing voices below. Sean was speaking to another man who looked somewhat familiar, although she could not place him. She stood in silence watching them, after swinging her sword around to her hip for easy access; Sean had a number of enemies and less-trustworthy friends. Caidy could not be sure if this new gentleman was dangerous or not.

Sean nodded slightly at Rhett, ”Yes, we’ve been hearing that they’ve been having some problems there. You’ll have to fill me in on the whole thing.” He smiled faintly, ”You stuck around longer then I would have though. First signs of mutiny and I would putting wind to my sails. Of course, you have a bit more reason to stick around Port Royal then I do, and none of the reason to leave quickly.” The pirate motioned for Rhett to follow him up the stairs of the tavern to the table that was on the balcony. Sean smiled at Caitlyn as he moved passed her, motioning for her to take a seat if she so desired.

The pirate captain smiled at Rhett as he leaned forward a little, ”I seem to have a little problem, Captain Morgan, and you are uniquely suited to assist me. Have you heard of Caitlyn McKenna from Miss Brinton? They are acquaintances, I think. Miss McKenna here,” Sean nodded to Caitlyn, ”Was assaulted by her employer, and barely escaped with her life. I assume that the Carrington family would press murder charges, assuming the Lord of the household was killed. Unfortunately for said man, Miss McKenna, before she fled, was able to gather up evidence illustrating his traitorous nature towards the crown.”

Sean leaned back in his chair, ”We need your help, Rhett. She needs your help, but I don’t expect you to do this out of the charity in your heart.. We aren’t nearly good enough friends for that. I need you to find out who said evidence needs to be presented to, and then deliver it yourself, clearing her name. As for payment…” He trailed off slightly before speaking again, ”I need not have any mention in this. Nothing will benefit me, but you stand to have a lot of gain. You already proved yourself a brave man for your rescue of Miss Brinton, and there would be even more honor for you to achieve by exposing a traitor. No longer would you be thought of just as some ship captain, but, maybe, a hero. At the very least you would be recognized for your efforts, and in Port Royal’s high society, the more things people remember you for, the better off you will be. That will put you another step closer to providing Miss Brinton with the life both you and her want, wouldn’t it?”

Rhett followed Sean up the stairs to the balcony, and Roberts did the same. Rhett noticed the young woman too, saw Sean motion for her to sit down as well, and gave her a second glance. So he had gotten himself a woman too, that was good. A woman with a blade, although she still didn’t seem like she’d fit in here at Tortuga. Maybe he stole her? That turned out not to be the case, after they’d all sat down and Sean explained what was so important.

He introduced the lady as Caitlyn McKenna, but Rhett had never heard of the lady. When he saw Abigail, they hardly had time to discuss other acquaintances – they were usually caught up in each other. Like last time, when she’d been so seductive because he had once more convinced her that they belonged together. He gave a slight nod to the woman, surpressing the desire to question her about what Abigail had said about him - and listened to what Brice said. He was surprised to hear about Caitlyn’s actions – interesting one, he thought – but he hadn’t heard of any deaths. “It is my experience that if a man of those standards was killed, it would have been all over the town… meaning he’s probably still alive, Miss… if that makes you feel any better at all.” Rhett said to them, feeling sorry for what she’d been through, but was curious to hear more now. Roberts sat by his side and didn’t comment on anything, he had that usual firm and alert look on his face. They were at Tortuga, after all, and Roberts didn’t know Sean Brice half as well as Rhett did. But that also meant Rhett was once more surprised to hear his own help was needed in this matter. As usual, Brice made it clear that if Rhett helped, he’d gain a better reputation among the higher society of Port Royal which would get him one step closer to Abigail. Abigail… how was she?

“Well… I’m really not sure what I can do in this matter. You simply just want me to investigate who needs the evidence of Carrington’s treachery?” Rhett asked, pondering about it. Of course he was right, there was honor to gain. But also an amount of danger he wasn’t very fond of, since it just might include breaking the law and such. What if he ended up being the one who was exposed and trialed for helping Caitlyn, since she almost killed a man even if he did assault her. It was her word against his, about what happened, and Rhett knew people would most likely listen to the one with the money.

“I do feel sorry for what happened, but I’m not convinced it’s a good idea for me to be a part of this. Miss McKenna is already in danger for her life, and if I were involved and that was found out before I’d gained the needed information – then I imagine I could find myself in a noose next to hers. No offense Miss, but even if this does bring me closer to Abigail and a wedding… I’m not planning to die in any near future.” Rhett explained as calmly as he could. “I’ve worked for a better reputation among the higher people, thanks to you," Rhett said looking at Brice, "and it seems to me you’re forgetting that although I could earn that, it could be just as easily lost. Especially considering past events, like the duel with Captain Kenridge, another well-positioned member of the better society. I think you’ll need to present even better reasons than those already stated, for me to accept this deal.”

Caitlyn took the offered seat and listened to Sean's attempt to convince Rhett to help them while she did a quick assessment of the man; he was certainly as handsome as Abby had said, if maybe a bit rough around the edges. His other virtues would have to be seen before she could believe this was the man that Abigail Brinton was so very much in love with. Her doubts brought her back to Sean and their unlikely relationship; she watched him with a passive, admiring gaze, knowing full well that only murder had brought them together, had given them the chance they needed. It was a sad thing to admit, and certainly not something she prided herself in, but it was the plain and simple truth.

“It is my experience that if a man of those standards was killed, it would have been all over the town… meaning he’s probably still alive, Miss… if that makes you feel any better at all.” Caitlyn was caught by surprise by Rhett's revelation and her expression changed drastically to one of shock and slight disappointment. She had certainly not intended to kill Lord Carrington, but she had by this point accepted it and moved on, knowing that the world was better off with one less traitor. Her brow furrowed as thoughts started to crowd into her head. If Carrington was indeed still alive, that would complicate this whole thing two-fold, although it might help to clear her name. Still, it did not bode well for her if Carrington was able to defend himself; he had always been a man good at convincing people of his own greatness and innocence and Caidy was certainly no barrister. The evidence against her was strong, but so was the evidence in the lockbox. If Rhett did his task correctly, they might be able to skirt an actual trial, so long as Carrington was convicted before she returned.

All of Caidy's silent musings stopped at that thought: did she really want to return? Was it worth it to live in Port Royale again? She had few friends there and a growing list of enemies. Her family was all in Ireland and the only thing to tie her to the port was the Carringtons. She had Sean now and although she wasn't sure he liked having her aboard the Maiden, she was growing accustomed to the life and tended to enjoy aspects of it. Still, for the last 5 years, Port Royale had been her home, and that was something she could not change.

Rhett Morgan's reluctance did not bode well for their little plan. Caidy could understand where he was coming from, but that did not save her disappointment and a bit of anger. If Rhett was the only man that could clear her name, then all hope was lost. Caidy pursed her lips and looked away from Rhett and Sean both, fighting the mixture of emotions that was bubbling up inside her. "If you feel cannot help us, Captain Morgan, then that is not something I can change. We have offered our turn and it is your decision now whether you participate or not. But if you decline, I must say that you are not the man Miss Brinton spoke of; she told me of a compassionate, kind, and brave man, not someone so mixed up in saving his reputation that he is blinded by his own folly. I appeal to the man that loves Abigail Brinton and would do anything for her, despite the risk."

Sean narrowed his eyes slightly as Rhett spoke. The words from the other man were not unexpected, even if he had hoped they wouldn’t be uttered. Morgan was a man capable of terrible things, and that usually didn’t accompany a spirit willing to assist those in need, at least not freely. The pirate wasn’t judging the other captain for it though, since Sean was mostly the same way. He wouldn’t ignore something if he could fix it at that moment, but he had a great reluctance to get involved with other people’s battles. Even with Caitlyn, it had taken some personal convincing for him to full invest himself into dealing with the situation on Port Royal, and Morgan didn’t have the same ties that bound Sean to the woman sitting next to him. Sean had never expected Morgan to simply agree with the plan the pirate had in mind; it never worked like that. It always took a little convincing and maneuvering to put the man in the correct place on the chess board for something like this.

What he doubted anyone at this table knew was the extent of what was going through his mind at the moment. Caitlyn’s innocence was something he wanted proven, of course, but if Carrington could identify him as a pirate, than it would make Sean’s life much more difficult. Accusations could be dealt with, especially if they were given by a man who was proved to be a traitor. It probably wasn’t the most noble sentiment in the world, but he hadn’t survived this long without considering the personal benefits of the situations he found himself in. Sean rested his elbow on the table, rubbing thumb and index finger together slowly in thought. He met Morgan’s eyes, searching them for the thoughts moving through the other captain’s mind as Caitlyn appealed to Morgan’s more human side. Hopefully time in the merchant fleet had reduced some of the bloodlust that used to dominate Morgan’s existence, but Sean wasn’t entirely counting on that.

The pirate captain spoke after Caitlyn was finished, his tone smooth and accompanied by a tugging smile at the corner of his mouth, ”Captain Morgan, you know as well as I do that the Kenridge affair was a bit of nasty business, and completely unrelated. You killed a man over a disagreement; this would be the exposing of a traitor to the King. You wouldn’t even have to speak or raise your sword against the man. But you are right, Captain, such a reputation that you have gained can be easily lost. I will proceed with or without you, but I can admit that it will be a bit more difficult should you not be involved. However, that doesn’t mean it will make things impossible. Consider, though, for a moment, what it would mean for it to be discovered that you knew of a traitor but did nothing? How would that make you look? There are two edges to most swords, my friend.”

”The evidence I have is enough to hang him, Morgan. I’m not asking you to spy on the man or to gather information about him. We already have that. Unfortunately, due to circumstance, we cannot deliver them to Port Royal ourselves, which is why we need you. It’s a simple delivery mission, really, but you can take full credit for it, as long as you ensure that Miss McKenna’s name is cleared of any wrong doing.” Sean smiled a little more, ”Consider it your patriotic duty, Captain Morgan. Although, you can refuse, without much effort, and I will be forced to find someone else to help me. I only offer this to you because you can benefit from it, but don’t harbor the delusions that no one else can.” Sean paused for a few moments of thought, before his eyes moved back to Rhett, ”So what do you want, Morgan, out of this? What will it take to convince you, I wonder.”

Caitlyn was silent most of the time while Rhett spoke - she seemed to be thinking a lot about what he said. Then she looked away from them, and then back at him. What she then said... he hadn't expected. She was not able to hide the emotions she felt, and he heard them through her voice. Anger, disappointment? But more important was what she said. He didn't for one moment consider her using tricks but he thought it was a bit annoying to bring Abigail into this. She said... that if he did not help her, then he was not the man Abigail had told her about.

"... she told me of a compassionate, kind, and brave man, not someone so mixed up in saving his reputation that he is blinded by his own folly. I appeal to the man that loves Abigail Brinton and would do anything for her, despite the risk."

Rhett found himself staring at her for several moments. Compassionate, kind and brave... that was how he was to Abigail, but probably not to anyone else. How many others would describe him with those words? Appealing to the man who loves Abigail Brinton and would do anything for her... and he would, but he doubted Abigail would like him to be imprisoned and sentenced to death. He glanced sideways at his silent first mate, wishing he could read thoughts, but of course he couldn't. Rhett didn't speak yet though, but thought about what he should be saying.

And before he had any chance to speak, Sean had taken the words in his mouth again. Saying that no matter what Rhett chose to do, they would proceed. And of course, as usual, he had a way of placing the right words within the right sentence. Yes it could all be easily lost, the reputation, but even more could easily be won. Two edges to a sword... and Rhett could end up being the winner, and a traitor could be hung. That of course was worth considering - hadn't he been hunting down and killing outlaws and traitors for the last many years? This would only be another to add to the number of deaths he caused, and one of the better. Of course Sean said Rhett could take full credit for what he did, as usual - then claiming it to be nothing but Rhett's patriotic duty to help them. Rhett had never been one of those who loved his nation above all else, but the thought of exposing a traitor began to sink into his mind. If he did not help, someone else would.

”So what do you want, Morgan, out of this? What will it take to convince you, I wonder.”

Rhett leaned back in the chair with a small sigh. "What I want..." he began, considering his words carefully, "is to be able to return to Port Royal, with the documents you speak of, and with no harm happening to my men. Besides that, if I am truly to do this as Miss McKenna says, as the man who would do anything for Abigail, I think I need more reassurance. If all goes well, then I wish for her to finally give me her 'yes' in marriage, and be mine. You both know her, and if you Miss McKenna truly is a friend of hers, I'm certain you can help moving her in the right direction. It's not that I'm afraid she'll say no, it's more a matter of when." Rhett stopped to take a breath in, then leaned forwards again, resting his elbows on his knees, looking from one to the other. "I don't know if you plan on coming back to Port Royal at the same time as I, Brice, but if it's your love here who wants to be cleared of all charges, she ought to come with me too and not stay here. Having a charge of murderess above your head is not good in the first place, and staying in a pirate port - with a pirate - afterwards will most definetly not improve your case."

Caidy wondered at Rhett's past and this "Kenridge encounter" as Sean had put it; how many men had this Captain killed? For that matter, how many women? Abby trusted him, but that was not enough for Caidy to be sure enough to trust him too. That would have to be earned; she was certain he did not trust her, if only for her association with Sean. She hoped her appeal would work, and in combination with Sean's insistance and logic, he might give in and lend them a hand. She suspected the favor might come back to bite her later, though, and that made her a bit uncomfortable.

Her gaze remained steady on Rhett Morgan as Sean spoke and he made his reply. Asking to have the evidence was reasonable enough, but she didn't like his insistance that they manipulate Abigail or his demand that she return with him. Returning to Port Royale this soon was far too dangerous and could end in the gallows. How could she trust him not to turn her in and put her deeper into misfortune she had fallen into? If Sean trusted him, she knew she would have to; she trusted Sean to know what was best for them both and he had already expressed his feelings enough for her to know he would keep her safe. If he felt that Rhett Morgan would bring no harm to her, then she would go.

She looked to him now, her expression full of questions. She said nothing, but knew he would understand what she was asking, that she needed his reassurance in the matter. She would go where he told her, she knew he would not steer her wrong. She broke her gaze with Sean, looking down at the table then up at Rhett Morgan. "What good would it do, me being on your ship? And if your efforts do not clear my name, I'd rather be the mistress of a pirate than dead. As for Abigail..." She stopped, shaking her head. "I will tell my friend only the truth and I will not decieve her. If you prove yourself to be the man she thinks you are, then you have my word I will help your case in whatever way I can."

Sean watched Morgan’s reaction and listened to his words, remaining quiet as Caitlyn responded. He felt her eyes on him and he lightly drummed his fingers on the table as he ran his finger over his thin mustache and the light stubble the adorned his face. He trusted Morgan, but only if it involved two things. The first was preservation of the pirate hunter’s life and of his ship and crew. The second was anything involving Abigail Brinton. It almost made the man predictable, if he didn’t have the sociopathic nature to counter balance that. The pirate captain had expected the Morgan would make the request he did, although he wasn’t entirely counting on it happening so soon. He had worked hard to keep Morgan focused on one goal, that being the hand of Abigail Brinton. While it did, perhaps, seem a little sinister of him, Sean knew from his encounters with the woman that she wasn’t as timid as first glace, and she would be able to take care of herself.

Aside from those two reasons, though, he didn’t trust Morgan with Caitlyn’s life in the way he wanted it. It was true that he was putting some faith in the man in that regard, but he wasn’t about to send Caitlyn on the Blood. It held the potential to give Morgan the upper hand, since it was apparently noticeable that Sean and Caitlyn were involved, and Morgan knew enough of the pirate captain to be able to assume Sean wasn’t completely cold hearted. He didn’t think of Caitlyn as leverage, but he knew that others might, Morgan not excluded. The pirate captain allowed himself to smile faintly, the expression just tugging at the corner of his mouth. Unfortunately for Morgan, and fortunately for Sean, the pirate hunter didn’t have the best hand in this little game. There were too many hidden angles Sean could come from, and he had already planned his own contingency. He hoped he never had to use it, of course, since he generally was beginning to enjoy Morgan presence in the Caribbean. At the very least, a decent pirate hunter prevented anyone from falling into a laze.

He nodded slowly at Morgan, ”I won’t force Miss Brinton into any agreement, just as I am not forcing you, but I do give you my word that what I can do to bring about your desire, I will do without hesitation.” Sean’s blue eyes caught a glint of the sunlight coming in through the windows, ”However, I don’t think it would be wise to walk Miss McKenna into Port Royal, with the gallows a possibility. You get Carrington arrested for treason, and I can take care of the rest. After all, Miss McKenna here can’t very well walk around Port Royal with an arrest warrant out for her.” Sean leaned back in his chair, ”And for all anyone knows, she could be waiting here per your instructions, until it was safe to return. Besides, if Carrington is found as a traitor, do you really think that any charges he’s made will be followed up on? And if Miss McKenna wants to return to Port Royal in the future,” He glanced at the woman next to him briefly, ”We can deal with any lingering problems then.”

"What good would it do, me being on your ship? And if your efforts do not clear my name, I'd rather be the mistress of a pirate than dead. As for Abigail..." Rhett raised a brow, did not like the expression on her face. "I will tell my friend only the truth and I will not decieve her. If you prove yourself to be the man she thinks you are, then you have my word I will help your case in whatever way I can."

“Then we both want the truth, at least that we agree upon.” Rhett replied before listening to what Sean had to say next. Brice wouldn’t force Abigail… Rhett sighed, that wasn’t at all what he meant! But he wasn’t good with words, sitting still and discussing things. He just wanted them to tell her, what he’d been trying to tell her for so long; that he needed her, that he loved her and could hardly wait to marry her. Also he said that he’d help Rhett out if all this turned out good too. And then Sean too questioned if it would be wise at all to bring Caitlyn back to Port Royal. Rhett surpressed the urge to roll his eyes, it didn’t seem like they were very happy on the prospect of being apart – well, then they knew how he felt, didn’t they?

“I tend to disagree still. I am not asking her to walk the streets of Port Royal, just to get arrested before I’ve done anything. Yes, she could be waiting here for further notice, but you do know it takes days? And if I manage to get to the right person with the documents, who’s to say they wouldn’t like to talk to her right away, instead of waiting – that could be looked upon as if she had something to hide, which is probably not the best in this case.” Rhett said to Sean. “And you should not worry about her aboard my ship – the best protection possible will be provided; which in reality means that the one who’d dare to even think about touching her, would never dare anything again.” He tried to keep his words as polite and proper as possible. Caitlyn was perhaps not of the better society, but she had lived among them and who knew if she wasn’t as fragile when it came to death and blood, as Abigail? The two were friends after all.

“So tell me…” Rhett then continued, “… who am I supposed to bring the information to? Lord Beckett… I doubt it. He’ll only help if it benefits him. Who do you trust in Port Royal, Sean Brice?”

Rhett Morgan was a difficult man to read; he seemed intelligent enough, if a bit rough with words. Expression was certainly not his strong point and he was certainly not talented at hiding his emotion. Perhaps Caidy's exposure to Sean had made her forget that not all men were as good at charming as he was; his subtle manipulation was something that had made her a bit uncomfortable for a long time, but now she was sure that he would never try to deceive or manipulate her. It took a good bit of will power to resist the urge to reach across the table and take his hand. She wanted his touch and his reassurance that this would not turn out worse than it already was.

As she listened to Rhett, Caidy kept her gaze on the table, running a finger across a crack in the old weathered wood. Rhett seemed determined that she should be present when he turned in the information, despite the risk. Perhaps he was right, that she should turn herself in; it would save her some face, especially since Lord Carrington had apparently not died. An innocent fugitive still appeared guilty. But if Morgan decided that turning her in would be worth more than saving her life, she would be as helpless as a child. Even with all the new skills Sean had taught her, she was no expert swordsman and was only as clever as time allowed her to be. Quick escapes were not in her repertoire.

Caidy glanced at Sean as Morgan posed the question to him. He would know better than she who could get the charges against her dropped and Carrington arrested and prosecuted. She couldn't help but wonder what would happen to Georgie and Anna when their father's reputation was torn down; she hardly cared what happened to Lady Carrington, but the children still meant something to her, especially Georgie. She hoped the little boy didn't blame her for what she had done, but knew better than to believe he would take her word over his father's. It hurt her to know she was tearing a family apart in order to save herself, but what else was there to be done?

Sean met Morgan’s eyes and he kept the gaze locked, as if trying to wrest some amount of hidden truth from the other man’s soul. He had a notion that while he could think like Morgan, the other man wasn’t able to return the favor. It didn’t really count against Morgan, since the pirate hunter was extremely effective in his own way. Sean simple enjoyed taking matters into another direction. He also knew that Morgan’s words held a bit of truth to them, and Sean was beginning to wonder if his own desires to remain near Caitlyn were clouding his judgment on these matters. The cost of being close to someone, he mused, and it was something he wasn’t used to yet. When venturing into uncharted waters, one was always bound to drift off course here and there. He had to make certain, however, that he was able to bring the sails around and straighten up. It wouldn’t do either of them any good if he let himself slip now.

He couldn’t help but smirk at Morgan’s notion of protection, but he covered it by responding to the question posed to him by the pirate hunter, ”Port Royal is full of people who are out looking for themselves and their own, measly gains. I cannot say I trust any of them, excluding Miss Brinton and your mother, of course. Neither of them, however, will be of any use to us in this little scheme, and I would regret it deeply should they become involved.” Sean’s blue eyes drifted from Morgan’s, finally, looked out through a small window. The glass was of low quality, and the blurry shapes didn’t reveal much, but he could see the sun and the sparkling blue that he would recognize anywhere. ”I will concede that you are correct in your logic. Miss McKenna would, perhaps, be of better immediate use were she present while the evidence is brought forth.”

”However, with that being said, I am not entirely convinced you possess the finesse needed to resolve this in the most expedient fashion.” Sean held up his hand to halt any protest from Morgan, ”I will be going along with you. I believe your reservations were against setting foot on my vessel but, fortunately, I do not harbor the same in regards to yours. There will be enough for you to do when we are in Port Royal, while I deal with the more…intricate pieces of this particular puzzle. It isn’t that I don’t trust you, Morgan,” The pirate captain flashed the man a quick smile, ”I just know you well enough to determine where your strengths and weaknesses lay. Don’t worry, though, you will receive your credit. You have my word on that, should you agree, as well as my promise to do all in my limited power to ensure you and Miss Brinton achieve some measure of coupled bliss.”

”I will concede that you are correct in your logic. Miss McKenna would, perhaps, be of better immediate use were she present while the evidence is brought forth.”

Rhett smiled slightly at Sean’s words. For once, Sean was saying that Rhett was correct, which was very rare. Actually, Rhett could not remember if that ever happened. But he shouldn’t be too pleased yet, for Sean wasn’t done speaking.

”However, with that being said, I am not entirely convinced you possess the finesse needed to resolve this in the most expedient fashion.” Rhett was about to object, he’d just smiled at being told he was correct, and then the pirate dared to speak like this? Sean then said he’d come along with Rhett to Port Royal, saying he wanted to deal with the most important matters of this business. “It isn’t that I don’t trust you, Morgan,” Sean smiled, but Rhett’s had vanished. ”I just know you well enough to determine where your strengths and weaknesses lay. Don’t worry, though, you will receive your credit. You have my word on that, should you agree, as well as my promise to do all in my limited power to ensure you and Miss Brinton achieve some measure of coupled bliss.”

He sent a glance to Roberts. The conversation had gone somewhat right until now, but what was Sean Brice really playing at? First he wanted Rhett to come, but then he said he could find others to help if Rhett wouldn’t. And now he claimed Rhett didn’t have what it took to help out Caitlyn. Why should he help out at all? To get Abigail… but it seemed like that was never for certain anyhow. He could get closer to her in other ways, it wasn’t like he needed Sean for that either. Rhett pushed out his chair and stood – Roberts instantly did the same, the hand on his sword just in case… he’d seen Rhett’s eyes, knowing Sean was right. It wasn’t that hard to see Rhett’s strengths and weaknesses, but this time he agreed with his captain. The pirate wasn’t being very nice or polite, although Sean clearly thought he was.

“You claim to trust me, you yourself pointed me out as your first choice for help in this matter – but suddenly I’m not so sure… You talk about respect, reputations and ensurance of what I want most in this world, but yet… I do not really feel I’m helping in any way. You could easily do all this yourself.” Rhett spoke, staring into Sean’s eyes. “Why do you need my help? Why do I need to help one who so openly proceeds to offend me with words wrapped in honey?” He asked, but tried to be careful to not loose his temper, and was glad both a lady – Caitlyn – and his first mate were close by. Roberts had a calming effect on Rhett, and Rhett would not dare to loose his temper in front of Caitlyn.

As much as Caitlyn loved Sean and respected his ability to get the job done, she was getting a bit frustrated with him as well. Generally he was quite the smooth manipulator, but in this case his prodding was pushing Rhett further from their task instead of pulling him into it. The arrogance certainly wasn't helping and Caitlyn took the opportunity to appeal to Rhett in her own way. She stood between Rhett and Sean and met his gaze, searching his eyes for some spark of feeling. "Captain Morgan, please understand. If we didn't have need for your help, we wouldn't be asking. Without faith in your abilities, we wouldn't have called you out here and asked for your assistance. It's true that we might have asked others, but you seemed the best fit. Sean and I are asking for your help, Captain, but we would not ask you to carry our burden... my burden alone. In the end, it is your choice."

Caidy frowned at the men's hands on their swords and made a point of crossing her arms as if to defy the gesture with one of her own. If all this came down to spilling blood, she would certainly be in the middle of it, but if it came to that their cause was lost anyhow. Morgan seemed the type not to hurt an unarmed woman and it was likely his first mate would follow suit, so the fate of the gesture fell on Sean, and Caidy was certain he would keep his cool unless he felt they were threatened. So long as she held her ground and Morgan kept his temper things should be alright, so long as Sean quit taunting him. He was such a child at times, so determined to be the one in charge that he would push his opponent into angry outbursts. She would have to talk to him about that later.

All she could do at the moment was hope that her plea found it's way to Rhett Morgan's heart and that Sean wouldn't push him further over the edge. Otherwise they'd be left with an unfortunate mess to clean up, even larger with the one she had started weeks ago.

Sean's eyes narrowed slightly and briefly at Morgan's outburst, quickly returning to their usual state. A sly smile tugged at the corner of his mouth, and the hint of playfulness in his eyes sparkled a little. It was good to know that some things stayed the same. Morgan was as he was, and that brought a little bit of comfort to the pirate captain, which was slightly negated by the violent pose the two pirate hunters had taken. For his part, he simple shifted slightly in his chair, draping one arm over the back as he watched Caitlyn stand and try to diffuse the situation. It was, in truth, probably helpful that she was there, since it gave Morgan a voice of reason that he didn't harbor any disdain toward. However, it never ceased to amazed Sean how the pirate hunter managed to get worked up over the simplest things.

The smile lingered on the pirate captain's face as he made a 'tsk tsk' noise with his tongue, his eyes moving around the room slightly before returning to lock with Morgan's. "You and I both know where your talents lie, Morgan. You've made a career and reputation of killing, not diplomacy, and you know it. Your usefulness is with a blade and pistol, not dealing with high society and the bending of words, which is another fact you know is true. You care to be offended? Then prove me wrong." Sean gave Caitlyn a quick look before returning his attention to the pirate hunter. Morgan was used to getting his way, and Sean knew that it annoyed him to no end when he wasn't able to do just that. The pirate captain, on the other hand, enjoyed getting his way, but knew how to deal with things when he didn't. Even in this situation, he had a few backup plans. Still, he could understand Morgan frustrations, as it was only through the folly of Sean's own stubborness that the pirate captain had learned his lessons.

"I need you, Morgan, because I can't sail the Maiden into Port Royal. I also need you because you bring a sense of legitimacy to Miss McKenna's claims, and can testify on her behalf. You also offer protection that is second to none in these waters. That said, I still do not think you have the needed resources to do what I need to do." The pirate captain shrugged slightly, "Although, I could be wrong, Morgan. You've managed to surprise before. I actually think you were doing quite well with out little lessons before I was...otherwise occupied." Sean eyes darkened in a quick flash, unwilling to comment on that memory any further. Within moments, his expression was back to normal. "So tell me, Captain Morgan, do you have the connections, wherewithal, manners, and eloquence to convince someone like the Lord Chancellor to give us assistance when a man of high society is trying desperately to thwart any such move? Are you really ready for that? If so, I can, of course, stay here and leave things in your hands. If not, I promise I won't be a bother on the voyage."

Rhett was surprised to see Caitlyn rise before Sean did so. She stepped up and placed herself between Rhett and Sean, and it brought a small smile onto his face. What else could he expect from an annoying pirate – a woman stood up for him. Making sure Rhett did not fly at Sean. But he didn’t speak, Caitlyn looked into his eyes and made him realize how much he missed looking into another pair of eyes, green ones. Making him realize how odd it was he didn’t even want Caitlyn as his own – but then again, she’d been touched by a pirate. Why would he want her; he almost turned Abigail down back when she’d been aboard Sean’s ship. Luckily she couldn’t read his mind. Caitlyn asked him to be understanding, and said he was best fit for the job. And she stood her ground between them, didn’t seem to want to move. In a way Rhett thought her more brave than Sean, at that moment. Women could be so strong, they could surivive situations you barely knew would come around.

He waited with speaking, for naturally Sean wanted a say too. Rhett hated the sly smile and the playfulness, he hated the way Sean apparently saw right through him. And Sean didn’t even rise from his chair, no he allowed Caitlyn to remain between them. Protection. Pirates really were cowards. And now he proceeded his disrespectfulness. Yes, perhaps Sean was right but did he need to spill it out in the open like this – in front of a woman? Rhett thought it good to be better at action than words, but sadly, most of the world did not agree. His own hand did not leave the handle of the sword. When Sean was done talking, Rhett still did not feel like working for him. He still felt offended and it wasn’t like a pirate would ever apologize. No, Rhett’s eyes went back to Caitlyns, giving her a small nod of acceptance.

“I understand the seriousness of the situation, and apparently you Miss McKenna have more faith in me than your lover.” He began, not caring to answer any of Sean’s questions – or at least not answering them to Sean. “You appealed to the man who does indeed love Abigail Brinton, and want to prove himself right to her. If you believe I’ll be a help to you in these matters, then I shall do my very best. For you, not for him – it is after all you, who are in trouble with society, since Brice left it ages ago it seems. I still think it the better idea, if you sail into Port Royal aboard my ship… and bring the pirate with you if you like, since he’s to help your cause too. But as we come near the town… it is not to be known that I carry such a man aboard my vessel – it could endanger your reason as well as mine.” Rhett explained calmly to Caitlyn.

Caitlyn's heart softened for the poor man standing before her and she felt her tension melt away some as she let herself relax. He had a heart underneath that rough exterior, and though neither of them would admit it, she suspected he and Sean were alike. Perhaps that was why he had suggested Rhett Morgan as the answer to their troubles in the first place. In any case, she seemed to have won him over, if not completely at least mostly, and some what in spite of Sean's efforts. She wondered if he realized he was doing more to goad the man than to convince him to help her. She trusted Sean to do what he thought best for the both of them, but that hardly meant he was always right. Even a man as smart and clever as Sean couldn't be right all the time; Caidy wished he would realize that.

She smiled at Rhett Morgan, placing her hand on his arm in a gentle gesture. "Very well then. If you think it best, I'll go along with you, and if Sean wants to come along, then he will. And when this is all over and my name is clear, I will speak on your behalf to Abigail Brinton and her parents if that's required. I know that she does love you, Captain Morgan, she's just frightened of taking the risk."

She turned and faced Sean, keeping her confidence to show him that she was sure in what she was doing. She brushed her hand over his shoulder as she returned to her chair, taking a seat and looking across at Morgan and his first mate. "Gentlemen, I think we have a good bit more to discuss if you feel comfortable enough to take your seats."

Sean allowed the grin on his face to widen slightly as he watched the exchange between Morgan and Caitlyn. Things were going better then expected, really. He knew Morgan would react the way he did to anything less then ego boosting, which Sean wasn't planning on doing. He didn't really need the pirate hunter, although it would make things easier, and he suspected Morgan was aware of that. However, what Sean really wanted was what was playing out right now. There was no way Morgan would feel indebted to the pirate captain, even if he should, and considering that Sean had more then a few cards when it came to Morgan's fate, it was something the pirate hunter might want to conjure up. Sean didn't expect that he would though, which moved him into plan 'B'.

Morgan would be much more receptive to Caitlyn, Sean had wagered, given the man's predisposition towards pirates. While Sean had an uphill struggle awaiting him to gain anything near the pirate hunter's good will, Caitlyn wasn't as mired in piracy. While it was obvious where her associations and affections lay, there was still enough left of her old life to separate her from him in terms of occupation. She was also friends with Abigail Brinton, which was not something that Sean could claim to. In reality, it was Caitlyn who would be convincing the woman to give her hand to Rhett; not him. What Sean could do though, and another thing he knew Morgan was aware of, was weave a situation in which it would seem to be in her benefit to do so, in the eyes of her parents. As callous as it was, he didn't care about the love between the two people, except that it was something he could manipulate to his own ends. The fact that it was beneficial to all parties involved was a pleasant side effect, not the primary intention.

He presented Morgan with two different personalities, including one that the pirate captain knew the other man would recoil from. However, he had been confident that Morgan would take any opportunity to benefit him in terms of favor with Abigail, and it had paid off. Morgan had agreed to Sean's plans before, although the pirate had the object of Morgan affection as a direct bargaining chip. Now, with Caitlyn's assistance, he had presented a situation, removed the incentive from Morgan, and then let the man decide on his own what course of action to take, with a bit of persuasion for Caitlyn. Even still, Morgan wouldn't be able to shake the knowledge that he, himself, had chosen his path, even though in reality he had little choice in the matter. That would be more useful then any amount of bargaining or deals the pirate could offer the man, since Morgan would be instantly suspicious of any such accord. This way, Morgan felt like he was in control of his own actions and decisions, which would make him easier to work with.

Sean gestured to the chairs with his hand, still draping his arm over the back of his own seat. "Please, Morgan. There's no need for you to stand about." He had no intention of contradicting anything Caitlyn said. It worked towards his own plans, but really because he respected the woman enough to know that she could find her own ways to solve things, and he didn't see any reason in trying to stifle her any. After all, she had every right to do what she thought was needed, especially if she wanted to stay with him. He already had a crew willing to follow him without question, and he could see the benefit in having someone to bounce ideas off of. "As for my presence on your ship, I'll have word spread through town on various occasions that I'm still present. My face and name aren't really that well known when it comes to pirates, or anyone else for that matter, and it won't be the first time James has pretended to be the Maiden's captain. It should keep some inquiries from getting towards the truth, provided word didn't spread about our little encounter with Miss Brinton. I'm not quite an idiot, Morgan. I know that broadcasting my tendency towards piracy is beneficial. You just get me there. I'll take care of myself."

Caitlyn smiled at Rhett, and he raised a brow – although with a glimpse in his eye – when she gently touched his arm. She said that she would take his advice and come with him… and speak on his behalf to Abigail. " I know that she does love you, Captain Morgan, she's just frightened of taking the risk." Oh he knew that all too well, but if Caitlyn could really help him, then he would also help her. They would both be happy in the end. She seemed to be a sweet woman, and had it not been for Abigail, Rhett might have tried to charm her too. But for now, he had another, and so had Caitlyn. Perhaps though, they could be friends? Caitlyn turned to face Sean, and then went back to her own chair.

"Gentlemen, I think we have a good bit more to discuss if you feel comfortable enough to take your seats."

“Of course, Miss McKenna… and please don’t get me wrong, but I am only trying to follow what seems to be most logical. And to me, that is if you follow with me to Port Royal.” Rhett explained calmly and sat down again, Roberts doing the same. His first mate had not said a thing yet, but he was there, making Rhett act more calmly and making sure his captain didn’t do anything foolish. What might be unclever to do in other ports would be foolish here, since he was a pirate hunter and already had quite a reputation.

When they’d returned to their seats, Sean dared to take the word again. Rhett surpressed a roll of his eyes, although he had not long ago seen Sean Brice as someone nearly noble, it had all changed during the last moments, and especially with his love standing up while he remained seated. It was her cause, but she was a woman and probably knew as well as Sean, that she could not do much on her own. Yet he let her speak, and she dared to do it. She was brave, Rhett still thought. Sean spoke of how he could ensure that it would not be known that Rhett had carried him aboard his ship, but Rhett still wanted to at least sail into the port with Sean in his brig. Just for safety… and because it had been too long a pirate had been locked up down there. This one wouldn’t stay there forever, but just a few hours would make Rhett feel more at ease with the situation. And he was sure that the smart love Sean had, could see Rhett’s point too when he’d make that. But he wouldn’t mention it just yet. And of course Rhett would not spread word of what happened on sea with Abigail, when Sean had captured her… it would be too risky for all of them. He still had to surpress a laugh though, when Sean said he was not quite an idiot.

“I’ll take you both to Port Royal as soon as the wind will take us there.” Rhett explained, looking at Caitlyn again. “And I will do my best to help you clear your name, Miss McKenna - since I believe in disposing those who truly deserve it, I believe that in this matter you are not the villain. And I hope, that even when all this is over, that we might meet during more calm circumstances." He was not trying to charm her or seduce her, but simply attempting to be friendly towards someone who seemed to need it as much as himself. Brice did not matter right now. Although he had helped Rhett, he was still a pirate trying to make the world forget he was one. That was halfway even worse than actually admitting it, and yet he knew he'd never be able to bring himself to kill Sean. Not now.

Sean looked into space for a few moments, listening to what Morgan said, but not really paying close attention. It was the same thing over and over again, really. The pirate hunter should have known, at this point, that Sean wasn't there to make him feel comfortable or keep his ego intact. Morgan's usefulness was defined by his willing to cooperate with the pirate captain, and there was a point where he would have to let Sean do what he did best. Sean only hoped that Morgan would be able to deal with it when it was all boiled down. He was spelling it out for the pirate hunter, perhaps a little too bluntly, but he didn't really have the time or energy to engage the other man in a discussion involving flowery prose that wouldn't be appreciated or useful. Besides, it all seemed to work out in the end anyway, so it was neither here nor there.

A bit of movement caught the pirate captain's eye and he turned his head slightly to see James walking towards the group at the table. Sean raised a quizzical eyebrow and the older man handed him a piece of parchment, touching the seal once to draw Sean's attention to it. James gave him a look, curious and knowing that he probably didn't really want to know. The two pirate's eyes moved to the other people seated at the table and Sean tucked the letter into his pocket without reading it. There would be time for that later, and he had no intention of making Morgan aware of all his secrets, even the ones that didn't condemn him in the eyes of society. The rulers of the world worked in shadows and intricacy, and of anyone seated here, that was Sean's expertise. Caitlyn knew how to act around high society and, probably more importantly, she knew how to listen and draw connections to how the strings were being pulled. Morgan lacked that subtlety, but made up for it by brute force. The pirate hunter's way in life was littered with the bodies he had cut through along the way, and no one could deny that effectiveness.

Sean, on the other hand, saw the strings and tied some of his own. He couldn't deny his responsibilities, but they were his to choose. Everything he owed, every person he had worked for, was a small debt to pay for the benefits it drew. The letter was simply a reminder of that debt, and Sean knew who it was from and what it would be requesting. It didn't make things more difficult, even if it did add some complexity to his life. It seemed, though, that such additions were becoming his stock in trade. He needed to clear up Caitlyn's problems as quickly as he could, so he could move on to the matters pressing on him. Perhaps that was the change. Sean was putting her needs above his, and almost automatically placing anything connected to her at the top of his list of priorities. Time would only tell, he supposed, if the other issues in his mind wouldn't mind waiting.

James walked off, giving Morgan a quick glance, almost as if to remind the pirate hunter just where he was in the world. Sean ran his tongue along the inside of his lower lip before pulling himself out of his thoughts and looking up at Morgan, "Very well. We'll be at your ship within the hour. I've taken the liberty of preparing provisions and supplies. Your men will find them at the Maiden's dock. Feel free to take what you need. If that's all," Sean stood, moving one hand behind his back as he did so, allowing him a tight, short bow, "We shall see you soon."

James' entrance into the group easily caught Caidy's attention; she vividly remembered Sean sending him out for other errands upon their arrival to Tortuga and was a bit uncomfortable with his silence in what he was planning. As James passed the sealed letter to Sean, she caught a momentary glimpse of the wax that held it closed and the impression left in it; it was not a seal she recognized having not been able to see it in full, but it was rare that anyone not of the gentry used seals like it to finish off their correspondence. Ideas and suspicions flew through her mind, but rather than excited or anxious, the weight of it all seemed to hit Caidy like a wave. She felt exhausted, completely spent and wanted to do nothing more than to crawl back into her bed in the dark and stay there.

With the plan on which her freedom relied finding it's shape around her, that rest would not be so easily granted. As much as she had enjoyed her time on Sean's ship, she was not eager to return to sea. Anxiety began to rise in her gut and she felt sick, knowing that she was risking the lives of Sean and Rhett Morgan now, as well as their men. She felt selfish and unworthy of such attentions, but knew that at least Rhett would gain something from it all, should they succeed. What of Sean? He would certainly have her undeniable affection and loyalty, but there was little more she could offer him, save herself. Doubt ebbed at the back of her mind; perhaps his love was not as true as she had hoped. He could easily discard her when this was all finished; for a man like Sean Brice, she was certain women were in no short order.

As Sean stood, she followed suit, offering Rhett Morgan and his first mate a grateful smile. "Until later, gentlemen. I am deeply in your debt." After saying her goodbyes she mounted the stairs and made her way up to their room to see to it that they were packed and ready to leave when Sean liked. If she could be nothing else to Sean Brice, she could be a good wife and lover, but was that what he wanted at all?

Rhett’s eyes narrowed when Sean’s first mate showed up, and there seemed to be some silent exchange between the two. And why so silent? It seemed to be about a piece of parchment, and Rhett wanted to know what it said. But no words were said between the two, and he didn’t like it. Pirates. He might hold a bit of respect for Sean, but he still was nothing less than a pirate. You had to be cautious around those, especially when you were known to hate them… and found yourself in a port full of them! Then Sean finally spoke again, telling that they’d prepared provisions and supples – which was fine, Rhett wanted to get out of here. Back to Port Royal, although he’d fit into that society as bad as here. But there was a reason he left the other port, and he could only hope that the rioting had ended.

Sean stood and gave Rhett a short bow, and Caitlyn followed suit. She said she was in their dept, and Rhett was not going to forget that sentence. However, she seemed like a sweet woman and he wanted to make sure she stayed that way. But he also remembered how Sean had found out about his own romance with Abigail, and continued to use that against Rhett whenever it pleased him. He also rose and gave them both a short bow.

“I’ll be waiting at the ship them… until later, Captain Brice... Miss McKenna.” Rhett said and nodded to Roberts. Soon they both left the tavern, but didn’t speak all the way back to the ship. Rhett got several looks from wenches but kept staring straight ahead. He wanted nothing to do with that kind, who served pirates! The gold or whatever a wench here earned, would be stolen gold, and they deserved to die as much as the pirates they slept with. Finally they were back at the ship and Rhett let out a relieved sigh.

“I’ll tell the men about the provisions. Are you alright, captain?” Roberts asked, putting a hand on Rhett’s shoulder and looking him deeply into the eyes… the first mate’s eyes were worried.

“Don’t give me those eyes, I’m fine. And I’m sure the journey will be too… what worries me is how things will be at Port Royal. Who’s to say they haven’t taken measures to capture everyone just slightly involved with that mutiny? Anyhow, I hope my mother is safe and the same with the Brinton family. We must be on our way soon.” Rhett said and turned away from Roberts before he could argue. Yes, there were other obstacles to overcome before they would save Caitlyn’s life and reputation for that matter. He could only hope it was all possible, and that there’d be a woman still waiting for himself in Port Royal.

Sean watched as Morgan and his first mate exited the tavern, weaving through the pirates and barmaids before they finally walked out the door. The quiet but very noticeable sound of a pistol’s hammer being slowly let down could barely be picked out from the din of the tavern. The pirate captain moved his hand out in front of him, examining the weapon quietly. Swords had their uses and their effectiveness, but he hadn’t been sure of what would have come about during the conversation with Morgan. While he didn’t think the pirate hunter would have done anything, he couldn’t deny the possibility of the other man being bought away by other forces. The mutiny he had been trying to keep informed of was, perhaps, the only thing keeping agents from coming after Caitlyn, but it presented its own slew of problems, and none of them would have an easy solution.

He tucked the pistol into his waistband and took out the letter from his pocket, opening it and reading as he made his way back to the room he shared with Caitlyn. His eyes scanned over the words as his boots made a soft thudding noise up the simple steps, and he pushed the door open with one hand, shutting it behind him. Sean looked up for the letter and smiled faintly at Caitlyn before making his way over to the fireplace. He finished reading the letter, looking at the signature for a long time, making sure that it was how he remembered it. He didn’t enjoy being told what to do, but these was different, a little. This was a job that he had agreed to, and he supposed that it was only natural for his employer to dictate the terms of which he completed it. It wasn’t even really that unacceptable, knowing what he did about the circumstances surrounding it, and the payoff was considerably more valuable then the cost doing what was asked.

Still, it seemed that things were piling up once again. Sean let out a soft sigh, tossing the letting into the fire and watching it slowly burn into dark ash. The pirate captain rested his forearm against the wall above the fireplace, looking into the flames, the orange and reds flickering in contrast against the smooth blue waters of his eyes. He knew that he wasn’t back to his old self again, and that maybe this was too much for him to handle. His mind still held a considerable amount of fog and doubt about the reality of where he was, and if he would wake up to find himself back in that hellish place. He needed to decide how to deal with not only Carrington, but the mutiny and the lockdown that had to have been put in place. Here, it made things easier, since leaving Port Royal might be difficult, but there, if they were even able to get to the island, would make it so that any attempt at escape would be near impossible.

It was difficult, and he would have to balance Morgan on top of it. Caitlyn seemed to be able to keep the man’s murderous nature calmed slightly, even if he was still quick to go for steel. Sean’s eyes narrowed slightly as the blackened wood cracked and popped. He had never been in this position before, and he couldn’t say he really liked it. He knew he would do anything for Caitlyn, but he had usually only had himself and his ship to worry about. If he had been the one to stab Carrington, he probably would have just left the Caribbean for somewhere else. He was putting his neck on the line, without any leverage that guaranteed he would be able to succeed. Quietly he rubbed his eyes, taking a breath as he desperately tried to string everything together in his mind, and hoping he would be able to before they reached Port Royal.

Caidy arrived in the room before Sean and had already begun to gather their things in preparation to depart upon his arrival. She returned his smile when he arrived, watching him from the corner of her eye as she packed. He had the expression of a burdened man as he threw the letter into the fire and leaned against the hearth. He seemed deep in thought and she was hesitant to disturb him, but eventually, her heart got the best of her and she rose to her feet, approaching Sean from behind and embracing him. He was warm from the fire and the weight of him felt good in her arms. She could hardly find the right thing to say to him, despite the list of important things she wanted to tell him, one particular thing came to mind especially. But she kept her silence for a while, letting him be, holding on to the only thing she had left in the world.

After a long moment of silence, she could hold back her words no longer and walked around to face him, searching his expression for what could be bothering him. "Sean, who was the letter from? What's wrong?" She hoped it was not her own presence causing him such pain, but could not be sure; she could be certain he would not tell her if it was so, and she decided to put her own burdens aside for a while. She was strong enough to bare them on her own for a bit, he had seen to that.

As she awaited his answer, she looked at the blackened paper in the fireplace, willing the words to rise up in the smoke so she could know his secrets. She had known from the beginning that Sean Brice was a man of many secrets, but she had hoped he would share them in time. Now she was not so sure. She knew he trusted her to a degree, but his own hesitation to burden anyone else but himself nagged at her. All she wanted was a straight answer, but didn't expect to have it.

Sean stiffened a bit as Caitlyn put her arms around him, but relaxed a moment afterwards. Far from anything about her or even the present circumstances, the pirate captain completely unused to someone being so close to him in what he would describe as his weaker moments. He didn’t want Caitlyn to leave though. She brought him a measure of comfort that he had never known could be present, and he could easily admit he would rather have that then be alone. The smoke from the letter drifted up passed his face as he could hear the quiet noise of the tavern downstairs, almost muted by the soft sound of Caitlyn’s breathing. He took another deep breath, his eyes fixating back on the flames as he reached up and put his hand on the woman’s arm, feeling the warmth of her skin beneath his fingers. When she moved, he let his hand linger until her arm was pulled away softly, due to the necessity of her change of position.

He looked up from the fireplace to see her looking at him, with a quizzical and curious tone to her eyes. A small smile tugged at his mouth. She was beautiful even here, in the dark and dirty places of the world. Sean was happy being with her, he had no doubt about that. The smile faded though, as Caitlyn asked the question that he knew was coming. He was surprised Morgan hadn’t asked earlier, and he reminded himself to buy James a drink for his timing. Anything that kept the pirate hunter guessing, even something that had absolutely nothing to do with anyone but Sean, was a good thing. He wouldn’t have told Morgan, obviously, but he found himself struggling with what should have been a simple answer when it came to Caitlyn. He wanted to tell her about him, to let her know what was going on in his life and in his mind, but given the circumstances, he wasn’t sure if he could bring himself to do that. Things were complicated, and would likely become more so as time went on.

Sean looked into her eyes, searching her, as he spoke quietly, ”Nothing is really wrong, exactly. Just…complex.” He offered her a small smile, ”There are some things that I know I can not share, and I do not keep those secrets because I do not trust you, but because you are better off not knowing. Just know that it does not have anything to do with you, or even us. It is a reminder, though, of the true nature of things.” The smile faded and he straightened up, his face getting serious, ”I am not a good man, Caitlyn. I am good to you, I am good to my crew, and I am good to a few other people, but I am capable of the same kind of brutality and viciousness that every other pirate out there commits. I would not be standing here if I was not, nor would I be as successful as I am if I did not deal in some ruthlessness.” He let out a hard breath, ”There will come a time when I will have to resort to that, never with you, but you may very well be present. I do not enjoy violence, you know that, but the unfortunate reality is that sometimes it is inevitable, and I am very good at it. I am a pirate, Caitlyn; I kill, rob, and manipulate people to serve my own ends, and I do so without truly regretting it.”

He made a slight gesture with his hands, ”I regret killing when I don’t have to, of course, but when that is the best option, I will do it without a second thought.” Sean caught her eyes again, ”I will see this through, to whatever end. You deserve your reputation back, and I am to blame, in part, for Carrington’s actions. I am going to do whatever I can to clear those charges, but you have to make a decision if this is the type of life you want for yourself, and if you can simply look away and ignore the nature of the things that I do.”

Caitlyn had known this conversation would come eventually; it was inevitable for an unlikely pair such as Sean and herself. She knew that Sean had a certain love for what he did, and though they had spoken before about finding a nice quiet place to settle down, she knew it would be difficult for him to leave this life behind. With the life of a pirate came responsibility and burden, something she was learning all too well. Even if he did leave his ship with her, certain things would follow along as well, things he would not be able to easily shake. He would always miss his freedom, and certain reputations he had gained would make a new life difficult as well, even if they escaped to the reaches of the earth. Life had a way of catching up on you and every action had it's repercussions. While she would be perfectly happy to stay with him on the ship for the rest of her mortal life, there were certain things she would like to do, things that could not be accomplished on the ocean with danger around every bend.

Taking a deep breath, Caidy crossed the room and sat down on the bed, finding a sudden interest in the lines of her palm. How was it that people saw their futures in such trivial things? She wished she could see her path clearly now, to tell Sean how she felt and everything that was in her heart, and to know for sure it was the right thing to do. "That's a question I suppose we've both been avoiding, love. And I don't have an answer for you. God will have his hand in it, no matter what happens, and for now all I can do is pray that he guides me the right way." She had purposefully avoided speaking to Sean about her faith, but it seemed absolutely necessary at this point. In a life as fleeting as her own had been over the last few months, Faith was the one constant she could count on, Faith and Sean. Clash as they may, they were both a large portion of her life.

Caidy took hold of her braid, draping it over her shoulder and playing with the loose ends below where the ribbon bound it together. "I have thought on it some. There are a good number of things I would like to do, but you are my priority, Sean. I have asked so much from you by giving you my own burden, this whole incident and I want you to know I would bear your cross as well. So long as you need me, I will be by your side. That I can promise." She smiled at him.

Sean listened Caitlyn speak, thinking about what she was saying for a few long moments. He didn’t like uncertainty. It held the possibility for something to go wrong, or not turn out in the most beneficial way. Of course, that said, it was probably the one constant thing in his life at the moment. Even Caitlyn, who he had no doubt would do her best to stay by his side, wasn’t guaranteed. The time might come where she decided she had enough of the killing, the piracy, that he did, even if she wasn’t present for it. He could imagine that being with someone like himself would be hard. He was a wanderer and his soul always pushed him onwards. He might find the means and ability to settle down at some point in his life, but that was a long way away, if it were to come at all. Part of him didn’t want Caitlyn to have to deal with that.

At the same time, he knew he was selfish, in his own way. He wanted to be with her, more then really anything else, and while he could see the reasons, he didn’t want to acknowledge them. He owed her quite a bit, even if it couldn’t be measured in really conventional means. Sean’s eyes turned back to the fire, finding some kind of solace in the flickering crackle of the burning wood, and the bright, undaunted fury that consumed it. He had to be so forged, if he wanted to turn this mess around. It would be difficult, and he silently wished Caitlyn hadn’t been forced in such a position. He didn’t judge her for what she did, and he didn’t wish she was gone. He simply regretted the way things had turned out, and, even more so, he regretted that she had been caught up in things like she had.

He pulled his attention away from the fire and walked over to her, sitting down next to her on the bed. Sean put his arm around her shoulders and leaned forward to kiss her cheek softly. ”I know you will, Caitlyn, and I want you with me.” Sean smiled a little, ”I also know that things will start to get more difficult as time goes on. I came here because Africa was getting crowded, and the Caribbean is rapidly shaping up to be the same. I don’t have anywhere else to go, which means I’m backed into a corner. At some point, I will have to fight, and it won’t be quiet or subtle. Hopefully you can make your decision before then, or it might be made up for the both of us, whether we like it or not.”

Caidy listened to him, knowing what he said to be true. No matter the choice she made, the way their lives were right now, they'd have little chance of just being left alone, even if they did manage to find some isolated island to hide on. Fate always had a way of hunting you down like a cat stalking it's meal in the barn. Having spent what she felt was enough time brooding over the subject at hand, Caidy took Sean's hand in hers and kissed it before getting up from the bed and grabbing up the bag she had packed for herself. She tossed Sean's to him and put on a smile. "We shouldn't keep Captain Morgan waiting too long, love. He'll up and leave without us and with all those provisions you sent over. This is certainly turning out to be an interesting little adventure. Once everything is said and done, perhaps we should write a book. Think of all the sheltered young women we could thrill."

She grinned and stepped forward, wrapping an arm around his shoulder and kissed Sean deeply, letting herself linger there for a while. His scent and warmth were comforting for her and sometimes she felt the were the only things keeping her sane in this world of chaos. It was reassuring to be able to hold him again after having thought for so long that he was lost to the world. Still, Davy Jones sat ominously in the back of her mind -- she knew his threat was not done with and Sean having escaped his clutches would only anger him more. Should he find out, he would no doubt be after them again, and this time he may not be so lenient with his punishment.

Caidy broke her embrace abruptly, knowing full well if she lingered much longer things would lead where they had the last few days. Their ship would sail without them, no doubt, once Morgan got impatient waiting. She was trying her hardest to keep a good impression on the man, but Sean's constant belittling of him did not make it easy. She wished he would be a bit nicer for a change, but it seemed he saved all his charm for her. "Shall we go then?"

Sean let out a contented breath through his nose as Caitlyn kissed him, standing up from the bed to put his arms around her waist, squeezing her to him as the kiss lingered for a little while longer. She was soft and warm in his arms, and she seemed to be the only thing that he found himself sure of in the world these days. Everything else, even the ocean, seemed to have lost a bit of luster for him. He didn’t know if it was because he wasn’t fully used to being where he was, or if the encounter with Jones had done more to him then he thought possible. He remembered how it had been before, when he had been able to pick through every situation to find the one that best suited his purposes. Now, while he hoped it was just temporary, things seemed more difficult; more convoluted. His life seemed to be whirling around in a fog, and he had to wonder how he was going to manage to cut through it all to find the clarity that seemed to constantly elude him now.

He felt Caitlyn shift slightly and, reluctantly, he let her out of his embrace. Sean listened to her and smiled at the woman, knowing that she was right. He doubted Morgan would look kindly on them being later, even if he didn’t think the man would just up and leave them. Morgan was stubborn, and once he had made up his mind there was little changing it, which was why Sean had wanted the pirate hunter to draw his own conclusions and make his own decision in this matter. Still, he didn’t want to deal with the man’s temper all the way to Port Royal. Well, that was almost a certainty. He didn’t want to make matters worse then he had to, in any case. Letting his eyes lock with Caitlyn’s for a few, quiet, short moments, Sean moved away from her, towards the small table in the room.

The pirate captain put his sword belt on, along with the other articles of clothing that would necessary for the sea voyage. He rather regretted not taking the Maiden, since he could have very well used his wardrobe. As it was, the clothing he did have readily available was already packed by Caitlyn, and it was just a matter of picking up the duffel. Sean hoped he would be able to secure another change of clothing once they were in the port, since there would be little chance of meeting the people he needed to clothed in the garb of a sailor, even a well dressed one. He picked up the dark metal lockbox from the table as well and turned to smile at Caitlyn before heading to the door, ”Luckily, the docks aren’t too far away, hm?”

Caidy's gaze fell upon the lockbox as Sean picked it up and she frowned a little. She had never thought that her fate would be so tied up in an object and it's contents. If anything happened to it, she might as well prepare her own noose or find some deserted island to hide on. As it was, it would be hard enough to convince the authorities in Port Royale of her innocence. Lord Carrington would certainly put forth the effort to protect his own reputation and who were they more likely to believe? A man with a title who had done a lot for his country or the poor girl who had attacked him? She was taking a huge risk in returning to Port Royale, but it seemed completely necessary. And if Rhett Morgan turned out to be the man Abby said he was, she should like to see the two of them happy; if she could help with that she would, but she was not completely convinced yet. All would reveal itself in time, no doubt.

Falling into step with Sean, the two of them left the tavern and made their way to the docks of Tortuga. Caidy kept close to her lover, wary of all those around them, though the streets were empty due to the early hour. She knew it was only a matter of time before that would change; she had seen the streets when they came alive the last few nights and was not entirely comfortable with what went on. This was a place she could never fully get used to, and hoped she would never have to. None of the other aspects of Sean's life that she had witnessed bothered her, but this city certainly did.

As they approached Morgan's ship, Caidy stopped to have a good look at it. It was nothing like the Maiden, seeming much more ominous. Perhaps that was just what Caitlyn knew the ship held for her as opposed to what it really was. Caidy turned to look at Sean, searching his expression one last time for any reason not to go. If he trusted Morgan to get the job done, then she would as well.
