Username: Sao Feng How did you find out about AG? Been here a while... Given Name: Taliu Surname: Wang Nickname: Sao Feng (Howling Wind) Age: 43 Sex: Male Ethnicity: Zhongguoren (Chinese) Country of Birth: Zhongguo (China) Current Whereabouts: Singapore Occupation: Pirate Lord Former Occupation(s): Fisherman Parents: Wang Xuele (father) Li Jiuma (mother) Siblings: Wang Tale (sister) Children: Sao Xihua (daughter, 9), Sao Xile (daughter, 5), Sao Xifeng (son, 2) Avatar: Chow Yun-Fat Description: Sao Feng stands taller than the average Chinese pirate at approximately six feet in height. The rest of his appearance is carefully crafted to conform to a stereotypical 'fearsome' pirate image. He wears his beard long and braided, his skull is closely shaved, showing off the numerous scars he has--marks of his veteran status amongst pirates, and trophies of the many battles he has been in and survived. A particularly nasty scar runs from the right side of his forehead down around his eye and continues down the cheek, skipping a bit before it resumes below the bottom lip and goes down the chin. It was a memento from a battle with a rival faction of pirates from Singapore--prior to Sao Feng seizing control of the criminal enterprises there. On the side of his head he has a large dragon tattoo, a result of one night drinking, and too many glasses of Huangjiu. His nails are long and painted black, a feature that would seem rather impractical, and he would not have done it were it not for the legends of himself. Stories about the fearsome Sao Feng used to say that he had long pointed nails with which he could kill a man, and since it seemed a key feature in identifying himself, and in homage to the stories about him, he started growing his nails out, and painting them black. His garb consists of black trousers, loose-fitting and tied with a sash, a dark under robe over that, an outer robe embroidered with ancient Chinese character, and leather boots. He has tucked under a gold ring set with a green stone, a red piece of silk cloth that flows from the pinky finger of his right hand. It would seem to be impractical, especially during battle, but he claims that it has brought him only the greatest luck, and since he hardly participates in battle personally these days, it does not prove to be much of an issue. Personality: Sao Feng is a man determined to get what he wants, no matter the cost, or what sort of actions he must undertake in order to achieve his goals. He is a man for whom the ends very often justify the means. He believes that honour is an old and outdated concept and those who foolishly cling to such an ideal deserve whatever ill events may befall them. He has no qualms against being one to cause such events. He is a man of great ambition, rising from being the son of a fisherman, and a fisherman himself, to being a pirate, and Pirate Lord, and a leader of a large pirate fleet himself. He is cautious about everyone, knowing that all it takes is one disloyal person to bring down the greatest of men, since he himself was once that man. He does not believe in employing worthy pirates--ones with the skills to succeed, rather preferring that those who serve him are not the sharpest dao in the armoury, to ensure that he is always a few steps ahead of them. Strengths & Weaknesses: Strengths: Sao Feng is an intelligent man, he couldn't have been anything less in order to become a pirate lord. He is shrewd as well--able to see the people and events around him and figure out how to use it to his own ends. He is however, not quite as shrewd as he thinks he is--he listened to Barbossa's clues about Calypso and saw the possibilities there, yet jumped to the wrong conclusion as to her mortal identity. Weaknesses: Sao Feng, like many, overestimates his own abilities, and his own worth to his allies. He sees himself as the most valuable member of any alliance, and finds it hard to believe that others would have little to no use for him or what he can provide. He also has a weakness for soft and pretty things--people, objects, anything of that sort. He is very much a man of material wealth, who appreciates that wealth, as any good pirate does. When going from Singapore to his vessel, or vice versa, he must bring many of his possessions with him--which costs him time, and proves to be a distraction to him. Sao Feng is also physically past his prime--in his youth he was stronger, but with his age comes a weakening of skills of a martial bent, and he would not be able to hold his own in a fight against the most skilled of opponents. Instead he has to rely on his intelligence and experience to make up for this weakness. History: Sao Feng was born Wang Tailu, the son of a fisherman in a small seaside village in China. His early life was rather unremarkable--he learned to fish by working with his father on their ship, and helped care for his family. He was poor and never learned to read or write--and knew no other languages than Zhongwen. That schooling, or lack of such, was perfectly acceptable for his station, and he never had any expectations to rise higher than being a fisherman himself, nor any ambition to go further. One day though, his father took ill, and Wang Tailu had to manage the fishing himself. He was not far off from shore when another vessel came in and demanded all his wares. They were disappointed to learn that he was only a fisherman--and a fisherman with a rather poor catch as it were. In order to make up for the lack of any value to his cargo, Wang Tailu was seized by the pirates, and told that if he worked diligently for them for a year than he would be released and returned to his family. During his year's service on the pirate junk he was taught how to handle a sword, how to mend sails, and the business of helping to run a pirate ship. He had a natural talent with combat it turned out, and earned the respect of his crewmates. At the end of a year, he was released, along with one of the other crewmembers, Tai Huang, and he returned to his home, to tell his tale of his long captivity to his family. His father had died in his absence and his family had fallen on hard times, so he "acquired" a fishing boat and with the help of Tai Huang became a moderately successful fisherman. Wang Tailu grew quickly bored with the life of a fisherman, longing for the days when he was back on board a pirate vessel, where he had earned a decent share of the plunder and was able to spend it on whatever caught his fancy, or try to save it to buy finer things. He considered becoming a pirate again, but he had no wish to be a mere deckhand. He had discovered the ambition that was inherent in all men. But in order to be a successful captain, or to be able to hold the position, he would need to know how to read, write, know charts, and navigate. His friend, Tai Huang had those skills, but lacked the charisma or force of personality to lead a crew. Sao Feng had all the personality, and ability to command the respect of men that was needed, however he was not sure that he could trust Tai Huang to do all the other duties that he couldn't, and not turn on him one day, so he offered the man his sister in marriage in exchange for him to teach him those skills he still lacked. When the two of them grew bored of the domestic life, and Sao Feng had learned the basics of what he needed to know, they set out on their fishing vessel. The however were not hunting for the fish--they sought larger and more lucrative prey. They attacked several other fishing vessels in the next few weeks. They didn't make much, but they were able to convince those on the vessels they captured to join with them--forming their crew. Wang Tailu, who could now navigate, as well as lead the men by force of personality, took the lead as the captain. To protect his family from any retribution, he took on a new name, Sao Feng--Howling Wind, and started in earnest on the more successful part of his piratical career. With more men he was able to seize larger vessels, and it was not long before he traded up to sailing in a junk. He became successful enough that he attracted the notice of one of the more prestigious local pirates. He was given the choice to either join the man's fleet, and pay over a percentage of his loot, or be destroyed. Seeing no other choice, Sao Feng allied himself with the man. He became one of the man's more successful Captains, and was rewarded handsomely for his loyalty--given one of the man's daughters in marriage, and a fine ship--second in quality only to his Lord's. A chance time, when all the captains were celebrating he heard an odd rumour that the man was actually a Pirate Lord. He knew that he was well in favour with the man, and that if he were to die, he would most likely be named the successor--and be heir to the fleet and perhaps even that coveted position of Pirate Lord. Sao Feng felt no true allegiance to the man, and felt no remorse for poisoning thim. The poison was slow enough that the man knew he was dying, and when it was clear he would be able to find no antidote, he went ahead and named Sao Feng his successor, never realising that he played right into his hands. Sao Feng claims the South China Sea as his domain, and demands that all pirates operating in his waters pay tribute to him, or be shut down. He "protects" Chinese merchant vessels and civilian vessels from all the pirates in the area, demanding a hefty fee and doing very well for himself. On and off for the past five years, he and Mistress Ching have had several disputes and their vassals have clashed in battle over them, but neither will declare an outright war against the other--especially with the increasing presence and interference of the East India Company. * He has relocated his base of operations to Singapore--purchasing an old bathhouse which is a known hang-out for pirates of several nationalities, and prime grounds for the trading of information, as well as smuggled and illegally gotten goods. * -- This will change if a Mistress Ching is applied for. Sample/Past Roleplay: The blade is the perfect weapon...superior in all respects to other forms. It does not misfire, it does not use other items to do it's killing for it--it's perfect, balanced, and is not troubled by matters of morality. Always strong, always sharp--staying that way for a long time even under averse conditions. The deep symbolic quality of it was part of the reason it was Sao Feng's favoured weapon. Sao Feng stood in one of the rooms of his own personal quarters--that stood far from the baths portion of the complex that served as his headquarters, his left arm stretched out to the side, palm facing down. His right foot faced forward, the heel of it aligning perfectly with the side of his left heel--which was a step behind the other foot, perpendicular to how his body faced. Grasped in his right hand was his sword...his...dao as the westerners had come to call it. He stood in the same position for several minutes, not even blinking. Then, quickly he shifted, bringing his dao forward, and shifting the position of his feet, so the he now stood with both hands clasped around the sword--now in front of him, his left foot now forward and parallel with the rest of his body, and his right foot trailing. He moved with the speed of the howling wind--his namesake. For nearly an hour he continued like this...sometimes throwing up the routine a bit by taking a five minute sequence and continually shifting positions, moving the sword and his body so fast that if you had blinked you would have missed a whole position. Practicing with others was always a valuable experience. Each had the opportunity to learn from the others, even if they thought that there was no way they could learn more. How another would react to your attack is difficult for even the most talented of people to guess, and as thus, the opportunity to be exposed to it is valuable. However, there are times when practicing by oneself if better. The peace and solitude, and the chance to mull over thoughts and replay evens, the chance at introspection, can lead to great knowledge of the world around...and finding one's center, and balance.
