Jack peered around as he entered the tavern. For a pirate, being in Port Royal meant constantly looking over your shoulder, which could be a bit of a nuisance, but Jack found it also added a certain excitement that a place like Tortuga lacked. Not a kind of excitement you'd want to put up with for any length of time, mind you, but excitement nonetheless, and any excitement could give you a nice feeling of being alive. At least, until it got you hanged - but then, Jack had managed to avoid things getting to that point so far, and he had no intention of ruining his lucky streak. The tavern was (predictably, in a town like this) a bit fancier than the places Jack usually frequented, but not by far. It was more quiet, true, and the clientele more subdued, but with the exception of one relatively well-dressed man (whose position by the door might well be tactically chosen), they were decidedly not the most sophisticated sort. There were no women prancing around, though; it wasn't quite that depraved an establishment. Perhaps later in the day things would become more lively; for now, there were no women in sight, not even a serving wench. Surely that was the very least a tavern required in femininity? Somewhat disappointed, Jack focused on what he had come in for, making his way to the bar to order some food and rum. It wasn't until he turned around again to find a place to sit that he noticed her. Had she just walked in, very quietly, or had he somehow failed to notice her before? Her dark features certainly blended in with the shadowy interior of the tavern, and even now that Jack had spotted her, he almost doubted she was there for a moment. She was doing an amazing job at pretending not to be there, and she really shouldn't be there - at least, one wouldn't expect her there. A slave (for what else could she be?), and a female slave at that, sitting in a tavern... There was bound to be an interesting story behind that. Struck by curiosity, Jack ambled over to the woman's table, sat down, and began eating, pretending for a moment that he hadn't noticed her. Then he looked up at her, smiling and nodding by way of greeting, chewing his food all the while. |
