PotC Group Watch?

Jack and I had discussed a while ago, the possibility of doing a PotC CotBP group watching event here on AG. We'd all come on, swamp the cbox, and synchronise the start time of the movie, and discuss it as it goes along.

Now, there are some obvious issues to doing this--we're spread over a bunch of different timezones, and we all have different schedules that may not work with each other.

We were thinking we'd do this on a Sunday. It would be an evening showing for people in Europe) and more of a day thing for those in the Americas.

If we did this, who would be interested in participating, and does the general idea of a time sound good?

Those of us in the Aubreyad fandom on LJ have done this before - it's a fantastic idea. I know we fired up M&C at 3pm GMT, but as there's quite a few Americans here, I think doing it a bit later would be good.

I'm all for it, though Sundays can be a bit tricky for me, so I might not be able to make it. :(

I've done this once for Star Trek, and that was fun, though it was run through the official website...but I did win a prize, so that was super cool! [/not related stuff]

But...when you say sundays are tricky...is there perhaps any specific sundays that aren't as tricky, or you know you might be able to make it?

Let's open this up to nominations for specific days, so we can better plan things.

Um. The next couple of Sundays might be tricky. And the 22nd is Mother's Day here in the UK, so if I'm not working, that might be tricky too. It kind of depends on what days they put me down to work.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a Sunday off before Easter, though. :)

I'd be in for that, sure! Problem is not so much timing as, I don't have a copy of the movie.

Sundays are about the only day I can do it, since I've been working 6 days a week lately and I have some sort of family thing scheduled on Saturday afternoons for the next couple of months.

Also, March 22 and 29 are in the week I plan to move, so while it wouldn't be impossible, that wouldn't be ideal either. But I could probably manage it, if enough people wanted to do it on one of those weekends. The time of day doesn't make much difference to me.

Sundays are best for me too. Not the 29th, though - but the others are all good.

Bummer!

I was thinking of suggesting this same idea over on our sister site, and whenever the date and time it was set for, I would take part in both (because seeing the film once just isn't enough for me ;) )...

How would people here feel if we set up two dates for the viewing of CotBP, two for DMC, etc...and allow members from other boards to participate?

That sounds like a good idea to me. Partly because I can't do it on the first Sunday of April either! And for planning a second date, if we do it also on a Sunday, I would need it to be done by 12 or 1 pm my time, which is 2 or 3 pm eastern time. Otherwise, Saturday morning/afternoons would be best for me. If we plan it far enough in advance, I can plan to be available that Saturday.

I don't have a problem with it. I couldn't do it on a Saturday, or at least not any time soon. I have too much stuff going on. But like Liz suggested, we might pick different days of the week to accommodate more schedules.

Okay, once I verify the original time with Jack, I'll get that up ASAP, so let's say one of those days is a Sunday, and a second one will be on some other day.

A saturday will work fine for me (but I'll attempt all showings even if it means skipping a class), and we'll probably want it later than the first Sunday of April (which is 5 April)...

So, Creejak, and anyone else who is interested but hasn't replied yet, will Saturday work? Or is there a better day?

Okay, first sunday of april, the 5th...at 11 AM West Coast, USA 12 PM Mountain? 1 PM Central 2 PM EST, 7 PM GMT?

Guh, I hate converting timezones...something like that?

I was never very good with timezones, and now that we're back on 'summer time' over here (as of last weekend), it's even worse. But we would start... four hours before I post this, right?

Edit: Damn! I messed up already. I meant: three hours before this was posted.

Sunday 5th April 7pm GMT... I can manage that. Sweet! Or, wait, we're British Summer Time now. An hour ahead of GMT. So, 7pm GMT would be 8pm BST.

Or something.

I'll be around, anyway.

Jack, I'm not sure if you're 8 or 9 hours ahead of me now, but I'm on Pacific Time at this time of year (even though I'm not on the Pacific coast :p ), which is "West Coast USA." It's currently 10:35pm, Thursday night, so maybe you can use that and whatever the post time stamp gives you to figure it out.

Merci! Nine hours it is.
*does a little more research now that the basics are certain*
So I think we're starting at:

8pm CET
7pm BST
2pm EST
1pm CDT
12pm MDT
11am PDT

I think.

That looks right to me. I also finally realised that I never reset the time on here (for me) to reflect DST.

Are there people who do not need a copy of the movie that may need assistance figuring how to watch one? (PM me if you do!)

I'd say that Sunday's rewatch was a great success! Jack, Monkey, Brendan, Sharpie, and myself were all in attendance.

I'd like to try and schedule another CotBP rewatch, for those who couldn't make it to this one, so if you guys have times you'd prefer to do this, please respond!

Some interesting things came up during the Rewatch:

  • Some DVD players were going through the movie faster than others
  • An RP/fanfic challenge
  • the Marines drinking game
  • Debates on the IQ of different characters

And quite a lot more I can't recall now. I did try to see if there was anything to why the movies were playing faster for everyone in Europe, so I looked up PAL and NTSC--and that's the key. PAL movies (for those in Europe, verus NTSC which is used by the US, Canada, Mexico, Japan and a few other areas) runs about 4% slower. There should be a way to output from DVD players as the other version, but that might require further research (which I'll be happy to do if we have another viewing with people from both the old and new worlds. ;) )

Next up...would anyone be interested in a DMC rewatch?

I'm off again this Sunday coming. Either CotBP or DMC, doesn't matter to me (I'll just have to buy another copy of DMC).

This last one was great! :D

There aren't any Marines in DMC. Unless I'm blind.

But I'm up for that. :D

And that's interesting about PAL v NTSC - we hadn't thought of that when we were trying to work out why some of us were getting ahead when we did the same for Master and Commander. But then, M&C has more of a European fanbase who took part - but it was interesting to see the comments from other Brits whose DVD players were running at weird speeds.

Most of my Sundays are free. I thought I might be going to Cali this weekend, but it looks like that's not going to pan out. So, I'm up for this Sunday if that's what everyone decides.

*curious* I wonder if everyone's voice sounds 4% higher in Europe since the DVD is running faster.

BTW, I'm sorry I had to leave about half way through the movie. Some things came up that needed my attention and made it really difficult to pay attention to the viewing, so I thought it was best that I just leave it. Hopefully, it won't happen again.

This Sunday works for me (not so the 19th, alas)... It is Easter, though - I don't know if that's going to complicate things. Personally, I'd prefer to start an hour later, if possible - then I'm sure I won't get detained at the parentals' too long again. If that's inconvenient for people, though, I'm sure I can arrange to go home early - or I'll just join in a tad later.

So this would be a DMC one, right? I mean, another CotBP rewatch would be better some other day, for those who can't make Sundays. I haven't watched DMC in ages - should be fun. (Except for clown!Jack. Holy excrement on a stick...)

Well, I'd be up for tomorrow, but this is probably too short of notice to be giving people. If we do want a Sunday for the first DMC screening (I'll be open to doing two if we get that second CotBP screening done), that is fine with me. So...does anybody have particular Sundays that they are free that they would be okay doing the hour later thing to accomodate Jack (or would an hour later not be good?).

Brendan--I may be able to come up with another solution than a DVD for DMC that might also eliminate the time gap thing. I just need some time to research that first.

Also PAL vs NTSC--I think I messed that up now that I look at my above words. PAL runs 4% faster, where I seem to imply it was slower. And...for the record, PAL runs 4% faster than the movie did in theatres, so people with NTSC are getting the actual rate and pitch of actors (Yup, Monkey, you are right, it will affect that, but how much of that might be noticeable to people is debateable).

So...with the group we had--Jack and Sharpie are PAL; Panda, Monkey, and myself are NTSC. Who is watching stuff on computers and who is watching stuff on actual DVD players? (I ask this so I can see if we can find a way to sort out the time differencial stuff).

As far as I know right now, any Sunday is fine for me. Just let me know ahead of time. An hour later is fine too. That makes it noon for me.

That's strange. I wonder why they did that?

I was watching mine on a DVD player.

I used my DVD player, so I could multi-task with movie-watching and the Cbox. Also picked up a copy of DMC the other day. I'm good to go there.

If we're going with another Sunday, I'm not sure I'll be able to do it. I'm working next weekend and I'm not sure what's going on the weekend after that.

Can do tomorrow, but Sundays are generally iffy.

(And I was watching on a DVD player - though I might have to nick the other computer next time. Tried multi-tasking and doing both on one machine. It was made of Fail.)

Honestly, the time is not as much of an issue for me after today. I still have a slight preference towards an hour later, but if it's any sort of trouble, forget it.

Next Sunday is not convenient for me; I don't know when I'll be able to veg in front of the computer. After that, though, most Sundays are good.

I watched on a computer, and will prob. do so again; it's just more practical for me, the tv being pretty much behind me. Though it would be cool (and even possible) to place a mirror behind my monitor, and watch the movie in that.

That's strange about PAL... What's in a name, eh? I guess we PAL people could pause a while halfway through the movie to limit the difference? Maybe? To do it more often would be risky, I think.

Any other thoughts about this? Suggestions for a convenient day?

I'm OK for pretty much all Sundays (so long as I know in advance), most Saturdays (though preferably not too late then), and I can do Fridays if necessary, though that will require a late start (and less rum... unless I want to be hungover for work on Saturday... which really couldn't make it any worse, so why not?).
