Thread warning for strong language.

"Ma'am, we really ought to be going..." Mary's voice took on a slightly whiny tone, one that Lynette would not have normally tolerated, but given that she had already gone through four maids in the past week and a half alone, mostly due to their incompetence when it came to serving, and who had some truly...unique views on deserving equality, that she decided it would be better to simply put up with the maid's annoying tendencies, than risk hiring another servant who didn't know the proper way to iron a dress.

"We'll go when I say I'm ready, and not a moment before," she huffed, glaring down the maid with all her might, who fortunately did step back a bit, "And if my husband comes here with a mind to hurry me up, you may tell him that if he wishes to go ahead without me, he may, but I will not be rushed into anything."

She didn't plan on starting to talk to her husband anytime soon, if she could avoid it. Ever since she arrived, and they'd had an argument, the two of them had been managing quite well avoiding each other, and in finding intermediaries to carry any messages that needed to be sent. Several of their 'staff' were starting to be visibly exasperated at the entirely childish way in which the two of them were behaving.

"I think he's gone out, Ma'am," Mary said, "George came up earlier to ask whether or not we were ready to leave."

Lynette paused, and put down the blanket she had been folding, "and you did not see fit to inform me of this?"

"Sorry, Ma'am, it won't happen again."

"See to it that it doesn't," Lynette responded, testily. Perhaps it was time to reevaluate whether or not Mary really did know what she was doing and was competent. Failing to inform her that George had come at her husband's request to ask if they were done. Tsk, tsk. It was growing readily apparent that the sort of stock they had here in the colonies just wasn't cultured or educated enough to know how things should be. Never mind being able to allow her to run a proper household. Maybe she'd have to send back to England to find some girl who knew how to act that could come and work for her...

The sound of another, fairly loud conversation in the house being held downstairs attracted Lynette's attention.

She sighed, "continue working, it seems that I have to tell everyone personally that I'm not ready to leave."

She left and went a short distance down the hallway, to the stairs and came down to see George engaged in conversation with a man in a dark blue uniform, trimmed with much gold. A Navy Officer, she noted with interest. Was this one of her husband's special friends? The ones he was always off spending time with?

"Excuse me," she interrupted, stepping carefully off of the staircase, minding her skirts, and both men turned around to observe her, "but my husband isn't currently here, I imagine he's grown tired of waiting, but like I told George, not three hours ago, I shall be ready when I am ready."

St Montgomery turned around, looking at the woman coming down the stairs with interest. She was a bit too forward for his tastes. He hmphed, and turned back to the servant he was addressing.

"I will, of course," he continued, "be taking this home as my residence here in Kingston." While the situation was eerily close to one he went through in Port Royale, where another incoming officer took over his residence, he did have to say that being in the position where you were the one who could deprive another of their home was very...liberating.

He was interrupted by the woman again.

"Perhaps," she said, "if you are interested in this house, you would be well advised to speak to my husband."

He watched her warily as she approached him.

"Of course," he drawled, and returned his attention to the servant yet again, "my property is on board my ship and you may send who you see fit to get it."

"I beg your pardon, sir!" That was the third time she interrupted him, he noted. The woman, was indeed, quite forward.

He turned and faced the woman again, and looked her up and down. She was rather finely dressed and had that annoying aristocratic bearing. Exactly the traits that some women seemed to assume entitled them with the right to inform all men as to how they should make their decisions, and interject with their 'useful' suggestions.

"What, do you come with the house?" he asked, annoyed. She'd certainly add some pleasant scenery to the house, but no amount of scenery was worth the trouble she would be.

Lynette's jaw dropped at the man's question. How dare he!

Realising that standing there with her mouth open was not how a lady should ever be caught she shut her mouth quickly and directed at him a very irritated glare.

"How dare you speak to me so!" she said, "I am the wife of the Earl of Edrington, a distinguished military officer. We won't be ordered around by the likes of...of a roguish vagabond!"

She put her hands on her hips, hoping that her body language would adequately communicate that she was not just a mere wife, but rather that she was a wife who was not one to be underestimated. She looked at her husband's manservant.

"You will show out..." she paused realising that she had yet to receive a name from the naval officer. At her hesitation George spoke up.

"Rear Admiral St Montgomery, M'Lady."

"Oh?" she said, her eyebrows raising in surprise. This was the infamous St Montgomery? She never really bothered herself with military gossip, since it was her husband's domain, not her's, and she was angry with him and treating things related to him as she would like to treat him, but she had heard of St Montgomery. The man was gossiped about by everyone, starting when he became Commodore.

The ladies in her circle often hatched elaborate plots to get him to meet their daughters, and spend much time trying to find out more about the man.

Since there was little else to talk about with women who were set upon advancing their daughters positions in the world, she conformed, and after a while did grow to be a bit intrigued. He was described as dark, dashing, and dangerous. A man who would be a rare challenge to tame.

"Admiral St Montgomery?" she repeated. Her entire demeanor changed, and suddenly she was the perfect image of hospitality and welcomeness.

"How come you did not say anything sooner?" she said irritably towards George.

"Please, Admiral, come in and make yourself at home," she said sweetly, "I have heard such...extraordinary things about you. I'm afraid that we haven't much to offer as we are in the middle of moving and packing, and I am afraid that my husband is out, but well...that is his loss then isn't it. Tea?"

St Montgomery smiled as the woman changed her tune quite quickly upon learning who he was. He had that effect on people. Usually, people started backing away and stammering in fear, and that was quite a wonderful reaction itself...but he could get used to this one as well.

With a dirty glare at the manservant, he nodded at the lady's offer.

"Tea would be acceptable."

The servant made a noise that sounded suspiciously close to grumbling, but St Montgomery let it slide. He normally would have ordered a beating, but since this was not his servant to punish (not that he was one to let something like that stop him) he opted to let the lady assign whatever coddling punishment she would.

Lady Edrington gestured for him to follow, and brought them out to what presumably had been the parlor. Much of what should of filled there was most likely already gone. Those army types did tend to take ridiculous amounts of personal belongings with them, and when one of them was a wife, naturally, there was only going to be an astronomical amount of things to bring.

"I do apologise for the lack of furnishings at the moment, if I had known that I would be playing host I would have had them keep more of the things here," she said, biting her lip, and St Montgomery had the sudden urge to roll his eyes. Biting ones lip? Hardly useful. Now biting one's tongue...that was an important skill for any woman or marine to have. Two completely different groups altogether...not that you could often tell.

He removed the sword form his belt and let it lean against the chair that she had indicated for him. He visually appraised it before he sat down, relaxing against its high back, and pulling his right leg so that it stuck out from an angle towards the armrest, and let the other leg lean out strait. The leg which would give him a bit of a limp and pain with bad weather.

He turned his gaze and stared at the woman, hoping the tea would come soon before he was forced to endure any more pointless prattle. And then she started speaking. He rolled his eyes this time. Seen, and not heard, what was so hard about that?

Lynette noticed almost immediately how comfortable Frede--the Admiral seemed with the situation. Sitting down, and taking that chair like he was taking command of one of his boats. It was certainly a very attractive trait in a man. A pity that it seemed to be one her husband lacked when dealing with his wife.

And here he was, seemingly bored with her hesitant conversation. Oh no! She didn't wish to bore him. That would just be so dreadful. She should be an engaging interesting host, all the better to uphold her and her husband's good reputation...reputations. Separately they each seemed to have good reputations, but she had heard that not so flattering things had been getting back to her family about the two of them together. Though that was hardly her fault! She'd done what she could to be a decent wife, and he never had the guts to act the part of a decent husband.

"Will you be bringing much?" Lynette asked, "I can leave George here to help you unload, but I must warn you, that we've had such trouble fitting everything in that we needed to. Just look at the parlor, it's hardly large enough to fit everything a proper parlor needs. And the dining room--it's not even large enough to host a proper meal, which is why I've been unable to host one. I'd thoroughly recommend gutting parts of the house and expanding, or otherwise seeking a more suitable sized home. Though given how much Kingston is expanding, day after day, with all the people moving in from Port Royale...it'd be hard to find a home in the proper part of Kingston."

She sighed.

"I can only hope that when we move into Port Royale we shall be able to find a suitable house, hopefully something close to true society, perhaps something near the Governor's. Although, I've heard such dreadful things about the Governor's daughter. Since you've been there, perhaps you know the truth? Pray tell what you know of things there." She said, eager to learn about where she would be spending the next significant portion of her life, barring any heaven-sent interference.

Post warning for strong language.

How very and utterly...civilian. To be worried about whether or not the house was large enough for all your fine things, and whether or not it was worthy of your social rank. To be fair, there were those in the military with those same concerns, but St Montgomery thanked his stars that he was not one of them. Not that he was often thankful for his fate, seeing as how so very often it was just another one of the forces in the universe conspiring against him.

When she looked to him for an answer there was very little he could do but stare back blankly. Exactly what the hell did she think the Navy did in Port Royal? Sit around an attend tea parties and compare their wigs to see whose was the more pompous?

Un-fucking-believable.

Though...the opportunity to say something about the Governor's Daughter was almost too good to pass up.

"Being far more focused on my career than mundane matters," St Montgomery said, taking the opportunity to lightly point out exactly how pathetic her concerns were, "however I've heard quite a bit about Miss Swann. She's the most common topic on gossip's minds, lest you count that Brinton girl a while back," he grinned.

"She's an absolute diva, always striving for attention. If there isn't a story with her in it, she goes out to make sure she is in it. And her fiance...a blacksmith and pirate. She's all but openly declared her support for men to break the laws and defy their king. From what I've heard," he said, even though he had heard no such thing, "she means to become king of all pirates, which one Jack Sparrow, oh, I see you've heard of him, and then keep the blacksmith lad as her lover."

"She isn't really!" Lynette exclaimed, almost shocked beyond words that a well-born lady like Miss Swann could even be considering such a course of action. It was one thing to fantasize about having a good looking, dashing, dangerous, infamous ravishing husband, and a well built lover...but for that to be known and be one's declared preference? How scandalous! She'd have to be careful to avoid the Swann girl once in Port Royale. Not that that would be easy. She was a high born lady, and had duties, like being social.

"Surely she could find some more appropriate lover, one with taste and appeal such as yourself!"

She coloured, and slapped her hand over her mouth, shocked that she had said that aloud. Sure, St Montgomery was a fine specimen of a man, and one who she could easily see fantasizing about and thinking of when she had no husband to comfort her, and only her own self. But to admit such a thing out loud! Especially to a man who had been rather disdainful towards her. Initially.

But that look he was directing towards her right now, that was not a disdainful glance. It was...it felt rather calculating, and made her shiver slightly, realising that she was being looked at and evaluated like one might evaluate a cut at the butchers.

"Surely she could find some more appropriate lover, one with taste and appeal such as yourself!"

St Montgomery stopped and studied Lynette carefully. She blushed deeply at her comment, and that was perhaps almost as telling as the comment itself, and the two together...St Montgomery knew that he was an attractive man. There was no point in denying the truth, but not everyone had the keen vision to understand the truth.

And obviously, Lynette found him attractive. And was shocked that she said so. Which meant she must find him very attractive. With a questionable leg (it was a battle injury, making it all the more manly and attractive), the uniform, his fine chiseled face...

He stood from his chair and knelt down on the floor next to her chair, reaching up to cup her face, his previously aggressive and non-personable behaviour suddenly gone.

"There is no shame in admiting that," he said, "truth be told, you are quite beautiful and attractive yourself..."

"Oh, why thank you..." she said, still blushing, and turning her head away from St Montgomery, so she needed look at him. Not that she minded looking at him. She shifted slightly back, aware of how close he was to her, and how bad this all would have looked had her husband walked in that minute.

The thought of her husband, might have made her feel immediate guilt, for allowing St Montgomery to continue as he was. He wasn't difficult to read, and made no attempt to pretend that he wasn't looking for a specific type of companionship. But she didn't feel any guilt. For all the time they had been married, she'd had yet to sleep with him more than a quarter score times. And given what she had begun to suspect about him, and what he did while out with his 'buddies', he had little right to interfere with something such as this if this is what she wanted.

She made a mental note to speak with him when next she saw him, about precisely that topic.

She turned back to St Montgomery....Frederick. Not a terribly great name, she thought, but there were worse. Besides, policies about lovers really shouldn't factor in names, she thought.

And if Miss Swann could have her blacksmith lover, than Lynette wanted her own lover to be quite a step higher. An admiral.

"I'm glad to hear that a man such as you sees no shame in such," she said, "but I like a bit more than simply talk from men. I like men of action."

"You do?" St Montgomery questioned. He refrained from asking whether or not Edrington was performing up to the standards she set. Either way, it didn't matter. He had a high enough opinion of his own quality in bed, and was quite sure that what they would do would completely surpass her undoubtably meager standards.

"Well then, I suppose I had better take some action," he said. He stood and walked to the door, and bellowed for the servant, who arrived with a peeved look upon his face.

"Your services shall not be needed, run along into town and be a good boy."

The servant looked to Lynette for her confirmation. When he received it, he looked again at St Montgomery and shook his head in disgust and left. He would have hoped that his lady would have more duty than to engage in what she was about to.

"Shall we go somewhere more comfortable?" Lynette asked, before St Montgomery was upon her.

"No need."
