Description: Sally Fisher is an “old” widow in her late twenties, and she helps to support her family by being a washerwoman. She is not highly educated or particularly intelligent, but she’s bright enough for a washerwoman and good at haggling over prices. Overall she is unremarkable.

In appearance she is not beautiful, but she’s decent-looking for a washerwoman. Her figure is neither delicate nor rotund, her face is more rosy than ivory, and her hands are red and chapped, but she has a pleasant smile. Her hair is the color of straw and her eyes are blue.

Sally has a cheerful disposition and is generally content with her lot in life. While she naturally wants a healthy, happy and comfortable home for her family, she does not harbor any grand ambitions or romantic hopes and dreams. If asked what she wants in life, she will probably mention having enough money to pay the rent, or even to buy a house, money to put food on the table, clothes and shoes for herself and her family, and a quiet life free of danger and illness.

Strengths & Weaknesses:
Strengths: Sally has a strong love and loyalty for her family, a powerful motivation for much of what she does. Connected with familial love is a maternal instinct, and she is not squeamish in a sickroom or overly vulnerable to illness. She is cheerfully self-confident. Though respectful of her betters, she is not inordinately intimidated by people of superior breeding, wealth or education. She is also a d—n good washerwoman.

Weaknesses: Lack of breeding, wealth, education, or beauty. Life would be more comfortable if she possessed one or more of those attributes. She also has no great physical strength (beyond the ability to lift loads of laundry) or any fighting or weapons skills.

History: Sally Moore was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in northeast England where her father and brothers worked as shipbuilders. Following the family tradition, she married a shipbuilder, Nathaniel Fisher. Her brother Johnny took a job in Port Royal repairing ships at the docks, and his enthusiastic reports inspired Nathaniel to follow suit.

Sally liked her new home in the Caribbean. The tropical climate and communal environment agreed with her. She quickly settled into her new life, but she welcomed the change in their household when children were born, first a son Natty, named for his father, and later a daughter Elizabeth whom they called Betsy. A shipwright’s wages would never support decadence, but they still lived better than they would have in Newcastle, even with two new mouths to feed.

Her brother Johnny also had his family with him, his wife Nell and sons Danny and Charlie. But the two families had been living in Port Royal only for a few years when Sally’s husband and son both succumbed to fever and died, as did Johnny’s wife. Sally was left a young widow with an infant daughter, and Johnny was left to raise two young boys.

During their time of shared grief and strain, it was a natural move for Sally to join her brother’s household as a temporary measure, thinking to remarry eventually. But now six years have passed and they have all become quite settled in the arrangement – aunt, uncle, nephews and niece. As her brother has shown no inclination to take another wife, there has been no reason for Sally to actively solicit remarriage for herself. Naturally, if a highly desirable opportunity were to arise she would not object; Johnny’s sons are old enough to start following their father’s trade, no longer in such great need of a mother, and Johnny can of course look after himself. But overall Sally is content as things are, as long as there’s money to put food on the table.

Sally has worked for several years as a washerwoman, managing eventually to get a position as laundry maid in the prestigious Swann household (where she had a nodding acquaintance with Barnaby Hales). However, she has recently lost her employment there and has decided to take up freelance washing without the interference of butlers and housekeepers. She washes for individual clients at home or works on site accompanied by her daughter (who is little or no help thus far in her young career).

The widow Mrs. Fisher welcomes all offers of honest employment.

Sample/Past Roleplay:
“No no, Betsy, that’s too much. Hold it like this.” Sally took hold of the shirt and plunged it back into the wash tub, splashing her daughter’s dress in the process. “Oh hinny, that’s why ye wear an apron! Where’d it go?”

“I don’t know,” her daughter mumbled.

“Ain’t it on the hook with your cap?”

“No…”

“Did’ee have it when’ee went outside?”

“I don’t know.” The child began to look somewhat distressed. Sally thought for a moment.

“Did’ee put a frog in the pocket?”

She smiled, finally remembering. “Oh! Aye, me green frog! I put him in me pocket with a wideawake egg!”

“Well go on and find him, then, and … Charlie, don’t bring that in here! Charlie! Danny, not in here! Take ’em outside. Outside with you both!” Sally watched the boys as they ran through the cottage and then looked back at her daughter. “Oh, go on then. Go out with them and play. And leave all them frogs outside, alreet? Outside!”
