Maggie Evans - or the former Maggie Evans, now understood to be Maggie Cotton - laughed breathlessly as she ran down the street, clasping her new husband's hand while trying to keep hold of her borrowed bonnet. "In here, in here quick!" she gasped, pulling him into the doorway of a tavern to give him a semiprivate kiss.

Cotton was grinning with delight, and blinked as he found himself tugged into the doorway of a tavern, where she put her arms around him and drew his face down for a kiss.

"Well, now, Missis Cotton," he said, still unable to control his delighted grin.

Maggie grinned up at him, clapping her hand to the back of her bonnet to keep it from sliding off again. "Missis Cotton," she repeated, laughing. She reached down and tugged at his hand again. "Come on, Gabe, let's go in! I want a drink and some dancing."

"All right. Sounds like they've got some dancin' goin' on anyhow." He paused with his hand on the door-handle. "Love you, Missis Cotton. Sweeting," he said and pushed the door open.

How exactly he managed to get the shore leave was still beyond him, but he was here and he was heading of to the first tavern in sight. Only when he came close to it, he saw a man in a green uniform and a lass run merrily to the door. It looked like it were to be some sort of a celebration, and by the way the two acted, it could have been nothing else but of a wedding. And where there were celebrations, there was plenty of drinking and eating for free.

"'scuse me, good ma'am.. good sir." He made another glance at Cotton just to be sure he wasn't no officer. "What pray tell, may be the occasion?" Caught them perhaps right at the door, or even inside. He just hoped that the door won't come smashing right into his face.

But before the happy couple could answer, there was an indignant voice behind the young marine. "Move outta the way! Don't stand talkin' in the door all day! There's honest folks as need to use that door to go in and out of."

The tavern was about to be invaded, McIntyre saw when he glanced out the dirty window. Invaded, and not by marines. The fellow in the green jacket looked almost like a soldier.

"Better close up, boys," McIntyre said to his three companions, who hitched their chairs closer together to get out of the way.

Maggie beamed at the marine lad who had greeted them. "We just been married!" she exclaimed jubilantly.

"'scuse me." He didn't manage to see who it was that was so heartily complaining, though he made a face at her words, having been not at the door for more than a moment!

"Congratulations! Miss, and.." He nodded to Maggie and then to Gabriel trying to pay no attention to the one that demanded them move out of the way. "Wish you a merry.. merry all." He finished with a grin.

"Ah, don't let me take your time!" He opened the door, slipping in but, holding the door to the pair.

After doing a good deed, Norrington felt entitled to a celebratory drink. And that was the reason he was now heading to the nearest convenient tavern, and hoping that they had some decent brandy, for his own supply had gone missing (woe!).

In his hands he lightly held a wrapped up tea pot of porcelain, a 'gift' from his unnamed good deed that he was waiting to be rid of soon as possible. While the the beautiful flowers that ran gaily around the teapot were fine and pleasing to the eye, he felt it a bit to absurd to belong to a Commodore of His Majesty's Royal Navy.

As he stepped in he was surprised to the number of people there. There was a woman to his side, and he got the distinct feeling that there was perhaps something saintly about her, and he leaned over to ask,

"Pardon me, but is there a previously scheduled engagement here?"

"Search me! I barely jist now got inna the place, for all that certain persons was blocking the doorway and all!" Sally exclaimed with exasperation. Then, finally turning to look at the gentleman and being dazzled by his amount of gold braid, she amended her speech with, "I couldn't say for certain, your honor," and bobbed a minuscule curtsy.

McIntyre on spotting the tell-tale blue coat, launched to his feet, sending his chair scraping noisily over the floor.

" 'Shun!" The corporal barked, bringing his companions lurching out of their own chairs.

Though she had been happily oblivious to everything else, Maggie herself jumped as the marines came to attention. She looked around for an officer in red or green. Even if she did not owe officers any particular duty, it was always best to be keenly aware of their presence - like venomous spiders that wouldn't bite unless you stepped on them, in which case it was worthwhile watching your step.

"Oh, he's just a navy man," she whispered to Cotton in relief. "Do you think he's an admiral?"

"I dunno," Cotton whispered back. "Prob'ly, lookin' at all that gold lace."

He had automatically come to attention when he heard the order given, which felt a bit awkward with Maggie right next to him. And just what was an officer doing in here? He'd only brought Maggie here because he wanted to celebrate, and he'd heard music and singing going on in this particular tavern.

"Please, please," Norrington said, "don't call me Your Honour, Commodore will do."

But the attention seemed infectious. Almost immediately several marines at a table were up and on their feet.

"As you were," he said, motioning for the marines to seat themselves.

He looked around, and could not miss the fact that most people in attendance were now either looking at him or whispering.

"I don't suppose anyone is capable of informing me as to what is occurring?"

The four marines sat back down again but did not resume either their drinking or their conversation. There had been a wedding, it seemed. That was interesting. McIntyre waved over the barmaid and spoke to her quietly for a moment. The girl nodded, hurried away, then returned within a minute with two tall mugs.

"Fer y'selves, if yeh pleases," she said to the greenjacket, offering the mugs.

Maggie pulled her eyes off of the commodore, wondering what a commodore was, to receive a mug of ale from the barmaid. She blushed with pleasure at the unexpected gesture. "Thank you. Who's this from? Thank you!" and she smiled at everyone nearby, even the officer. He didn't seem to be perturbed by their celebration, and she was too happy to be nervous about him for long.

[Or were they mugs of cocoa? I hope there's marshmallows.]

Whyte relaxed when they were dismissed but slunk past a few tables to find himself his own, rather than walk past Norrington. Comfortably seated, he observed as the pair received a mug each. Proper that, as it seemed the order was not by them by one of the group already there. If he'd been paying attention enough he knew which too.

Cotton grinned, accepting the ale from the girl, who smiled at him. "Thank'ee kindly, Miss," he said and nodded to the red-coated men sitting at the table. "Kind in you," he said, realising one of them had paid for their drinks.

"Cheers," McIntyre replied, lifting his tankard in toast. That had been the last of his spare money, which meant no more ale for him - at least if he had to pay for them - but it was worth it.

Maybe the Commodore could be convinced to buy them all a round.
